Revisiting the frame recall

Just think about what you want or need.
Leveling or lifting it’s easier to install new parts anyway.
Only cost would be assembling coil overs.
Alignment has to be done anyway.
Clutch pressure plate well it should be “removed” already so.
Maybe a trans flush should be done it should be cheaper doing it now.
Engine work requiring the motor removed may be a good time.
If it’s a bolt on part and they don’t need to remove more my dealer was cool with it.
I ordered oem parts from a online Toyota dealer for a lot cheaper than they could do.

TOYOTA did gas tank straps as part of the frame.
Hard brake lines running the frame were also installed. Soft lines from frame to wheel were reused.

 

I just added both front UCA's, I'm supplying the parts. Tech called for a left, gonna do 'em both and the frontend should be good for a while. Tanks straps on them, also. I thought of cab bushings, but they're really not bad, just dirty.

 

I did this last summer, on a lift, and didn't think I had a chance to qualify. I was wrong. Dealer inspected it in late Nov. and called a week later, incoming new frame! Take it in for the inspection!

 

I'm taking mine in a week from today. Only bought it a month ago, and apparently having this inspection done isn't a prerequisite when selling a truck as "Certified Pre-Owned." No trouble, I'll have them check it out myself.

 

I’m likely going to stop by the dealership near my work next week. Even if my home inspection doesn’t make it appear like it’ll qualify, I’ll have them look at it anyway.

 

You’d think the inspection would be part of CPO but from what I understand CPO means they’ve inspected pretty much nothing. When I bought mine I didn’t know all the things i know now, but knew to check out the frame, which looked nice and black, no rust. After working on it a bit for its first 30k service, I came to learn they painted my frame with something to hide all the surface rust. If all came off pretty quickly, but I noticed the frame and hitch stickers were all painted over too. The rust wasn’t bad, but I’m pissed they hid it. Shady shit.

 

Has anyone successfully had their frame replaced due to de-lamination? Specifically the area in the middle of the truck where the steel overlaps? I remember reading a case on here somewhere that got theirs replaced due to this.

I have an 09, so about 1 more year left in the program. I dont see much for developing holes, but I have significant de-lamination. Lastly, can anyone recommend any customer friendly dealerships in the Asheville NC region?

 

Just picked mine up. Very satisfied after about a 15mile ride home. Rides waaaay better and feels 'new truck tight'. One unexpected benefit, the new struts & U&LCAs, have given a noticeable lift/level to the front. I was thinking of doing that at some point anyway, done! The tech started on it Mon a.m. and they called me today at lunchtime to say she's done! Pretty good turnaround I'd say! Pics to follow, needs a bath:

Glad your happy so far.
There’s a lot of horror stories about the swap going bad.
I crawled underneath mine and looked at their work. He continued my routine of covering exposed threads with grease.
They did the internal under coating also with the white stuff.
And plugged a lot of the holes in the frame.
He cut the wire clips so a normal tie is no different than stock would be.
But they are not oem but are neat and just as good.
I know this has given my truck new life.
I want to see who gives out first.
It’s all manual and don’t drive itself.

Same here. Seems to be where most problems occur. I'm getting under it this weekend an Fluid Filming the hell outa it while it's still squeaky clean....

Still fresh as a new born, but first impressions appear they got it right!

 

I've got a 2010 that may be a candidate for this. However, the previous owner cut off the front of the frame horns where the bumper mounts and welded on a pre-runner front bumper.

Do you think this would automatically disqualify me from being eligible? I've also got a blown motor, so it would be the perfect time to do a motor swap!

 

I'm 18 months into the new frame and the truck still drives and rides like new. The only thing I would tell you to replace that I missed was the power steering rack. Mine recently failed and it would have saved me $$$ to have it put on with the frame. I had my gas tank straps done with the frame and am glad I did.

 

When I talked to the tech (pics on page 3), he said sometimes he'll suggest a rack if he see's leaking or seepage. Looked mine over, bone dry so we went with it. My truck is garaged, so any type of weeping/leaking is easily detected. Never had so much as a drop of anything since I've owned it (just over a year now). Tank straps were included, too. I'm still giddy, but I'll get under it today, just to put an eyeball on everything before FluidFilm.

Took it over to show my oldest son yesterday evening. He said now get rid of those grandpa tires, and that trucks done!

Just had my inspection done today. The dealer rep said my frame looks fine, no need for a replacement. Kinda bummed that I don't get free stuff, kinda happy that I (supposedly) don't need it.

 

You've got a '15. You've got 'til 2027 to get 'free stuff'...cheer up.

 

If I were you, I’d get under the truck this spring and coat it with something. If I had bought my truck new I’d have definitely been meticulous about cleaning and coating the entire underbody. But I bought mine when it was already 6 years old and the rust had already shown its ugly head. I’ve tried to salvage the tow hitch and I managed to make the rear diff look much better, but the frame itself is basically a lost cause at this point.

I’m hoping to eventually make it to the dealership for an inspection, but I’m guessing it won’t be anytime soon given the current circumstances...
