Full tank, or empty tank? That is the question.

I admit to sometimes being an Asshole, but not for the reason you think.

In my defense, the picture is a cut-n-paste from another recent TW thread. I think it was titled "Is it OK to sit on your tailgate" or something like that. . . . o_O

Anyway, the OP wants a measurement specification of his truck in mm, but wants to park it in a parking garage that's specified in feet.

That just ain't gonna work. Look at how NASA screwed up on the Hubble telescope. And they are the rocket surgeons !

Laser disto can work too but you would need something above the truck to hit the laser with. Measure from the shark fin to something just above it then move the taco and hit the same spot with the laser directly from the ground to the same spot and subtract. Should be pretty accurate that way as well with out having to use a bunch of stuff or more than one person. Just a ladder, laser disto, and something to measure from above the taco.

Lol. “6 Foot Clearance” parking garages aren’t always 6’ either. Usually there’s an extra few inches as a safety buffer at most places....

Build 2 2x4 stands, place them just wider then the truck. Now put layers of 1 inch styrofoam between them starting at 5 foot 10 inches. Stack 12 pieces. Drive thru the structure. Count up to the first styrofoam piece the shark fin doesn't touch. That will be your clearance. Retest for accuracy. Drive slow because momentum can cause spring compression or bounce that will cause errors in measurement. Please video tape. And post for informational purposes.

I think I will hang a plumb bob from the garage roof and lower it to the floor and make a mark, raise it and drive the truck in, drop plumb bob to top of the shark fin, back the truck out of garage, then measure the distance to the spot on the ground with my Bosch laser distance measurer. It is accurate within 1/16".

    Thanks!

Did you build the garage around the Tacoma o_O

If you are going to back it out, then don't you already know it fits in the garage?

Sorry it was not clear. Different garage, the one attached to my house. That one has a width issue, I have to fold in the mirrors. :)

Okay but there's a sign that says "no pickups." And somebody wedged a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited a few months ago. So the safety margin ain't "an extra few inches" because according to what I looked up the Jeep is 1848 mm. My truck is only around 42 mm shorter.

I would love to know what the insurance company said to the Jeep guy when he claimed.

Measuring your truck is one thing, but how much do you trust the garage sign and what they list as clear height? Trying to measure down to sub-10mm makes no since when the garage signage and the actual clear height could vary by more. I allow 3-4 inches between what I've measured and what they list as max height. That has worked 99% of the time for me. The 1% led to a green scrape on the roof of my 3/4 ton truck.
