I agree. I think our opinions are more similar than you think. I invest in blue chips for dividends only. I don’t ever plan to sell, just collect my share from their earnings.

Can we dig up a few pages back when you got in? I can’t remember, but it seemed genius at the time. Not so sure now.

It’s easy to build a portfolio with a 5% yield. It will go up and down, but you can ignore that noise.

How tf can you have an investment thread without allowing any politics at all? That’s part of investing. As long as it’s related to investing whatever.

whatever not my circus not my monkeys. I put more into my Roth last night hope I made enough of a good call. Stretch goal is retire at 50 :D

Lol I know! I bought back in when S&P dipped under 2900. When the market recovers I'll have captured some of it, but admittedly not all! Oh well.
Very well could be. I thought someone was gonna pull a stupid back there. Glad they didnt.

For the heck of it we bought into RCL. Figure when the cruise lines do go back up we will take the profit and run haha. Threw more down into DIS to lower our average price per share. Threw even more into our Vanguard fund VFIAX, that one was making us a killing before the tank happened and the only one still green overall for us since we moved over to Vanguard awhile back.

People that panic sell will take real losses while people like Buffet (bag holder) will buy even more during downturns. I have no problem staying in ... yeah it sucks being down (over 37k personally last I looked) but long run it will all be alright. If the market was to crash and NOT recover then just know being out of money will be the LEAST of your problems.

    Yup

I’ve been in the market since the mid 80s. I’ve held thru through many downturns— and the market keeps going higher.

Losses aren’t real unless you sell something. If the fundamentals haven’t substantially changed, the rest is just noise.

Sure play the volatility with some cash for fun, I just bought some darn good Rye with proceeds from AAPL and CCL and DAL volatility this week.

Yet all my long term stuff is still where it is. It was where it needed to be then, it’s where it needs to be now.

Here's the thing, it's easy to look at it from the point of well I still have tons of working years ahead to recover from this rout. Unfortunately if someone is currently retired and is "late" in life they're not likely going to hang around to see if recovery happens. Side note: Anyone who is cheering the idea of zero or negative interest rates doesn't have a clue as to what that will do to the pension funds. That's the other ticking time bomb.

The market right now is a minefield and we're just waiting for the next thing to blowup

Talked to my bank yesterday about renewing a 13 month cd that was at 2.2%. Now a 13 month cd is at 0.15% but a money market account there is paying 1%

What are your thoughts on someone who buys and holds forever, never sells, and is just happy receiving dividends? What’s the downfall in that strategy?

lots of pundits come around say the sky is falling, crash and burn, yada yada

lol ... but one really never knows what shit its really gonna take to hit the fan and they will not announce this beforehand

Completely true - though I'd also suggest that as one's investment horizon lessens, one needs to be shifting one's asset distribution to increase the percentage of lower risk investments to avoid just that scenario. Sure you trade off potential growth, but say you're 70 and have five years living expenses in laddered CDs, distributed to stay within the FDIC insurance limits. Gives a lot of runway for recovery.

Mostly Dividend Aristocrats that are consumer staples. Nothing exciting but not going away either. No Enron type investments for me.

I would be freaking out a bit if I was retired or really close to it. IMO the pension system needs to tank and be restructured, its bleeding the orginizations dry funding them. If I was in a job with a pension, I would have zero faith it would even be there when I retired like some other programs we are forced to pay into and need not mention. I agree zero or negative rates will be a disaster, look at the groups really championing them and their track record.

I had more typed but would probibly get banned despite it being 100% relevant to what's going on right now.
