Hi guys, I took the head off today. I don’t see any obvious head gasket leak on the head or block. Issue was misfires at cold idle, I could hear burbles from the exhaust and eventually got P0301 and the coolant in the overflow got extremely low.

I go by compression numbers over visual cues. Sometimes it's obvious, sometimes it's not.
And then there is the matter of cracks.

Those bearings and journals look ok to me based on what the speed shop machinist told me about mine.

I did a compression test a while back. Cylinder 1, 3 and 5 were as follows. I did not do a leak down.

    175, 160, 165psi

My cylinder head width is with my verniers is at 5.32in.

Normal head height I believe is 5.336-5.339in

This engine already had both gaskets replaced not too long ago. Unless I measured wrong, they probably took too much off, which the manual says you can’t take any off, plus the worn sprockets gave me a half tooth off alignment of the cam timing marks.

I haven’t removed the bank 2 head yet. I wasn’t getting codes from that side.

Cylinder head passed warpage test. Block has failed the test.
Max warpage on cylinder head is 0.0039. 0.0015 gauge could not get under the head.

Block max warpage is 0.0020 and a 0.002 feeler is able to pass through easily in a few spots.

    Tough break man.

I'd guess that machining too much off the heads could also cause the loose timing chain situation.

When mine started blowing bubbles in the coolant, I still had perfect compression numbers too. And after I opened it, I couldn't really see any visible signs of leakage. I never checked the block because I don't have a good straightedge, but also, I was pretty confident the engine had been well maintained and had never overheated or been previously opened.

Good luck with the engine swap -- and if you remember, keep posting pictures!

I paid a high price for this truck. The rest of the truck is still in good shape. It is a regular cab with the 8ft bed and the RA60 6-speed manual. The paint is very good, very few dents, the frame is spotless, no tears on the interior. It’s very hard to find a reg cab work truck that isn’t completely abused. I’ll just put a good engine in it. Illl keep you guys updated.

Shame you paid a high price for it.
You didn't check for gases in coolant prior?

Coolant looked clean and green. Didn’t occur to me at the time. The seller mentioned the oil leak as a power steering issue. I wasn’t very familiar with the 4.0 prior to purchasing this truck. I really do like the truck, it’s got more payload, 6MT and the low end torque feels better compared to 3.5 Taco. I want to take care of it.

I gonna wait till after I get my tax refund to get a motor. I want someone’s opinion on this other issue I found this motor. The timing marks were about 1/2 tooth off. The truck would misfire mostly in the morning when cold and would improve as the engine warmed up, it would still misfire a little at idle or low speeds even when hot. The missing coolant would disappear from the over flow tank but the radiator was always full of coolant whenever I checked. No overheating during my ownership. I wish I did an exhaust gas test. I still have the coolant stored in some milk jugs. Is it possible perhaps the coolant was leaking slowly through somewhere else? The radiator is not original either.
