I bought a 2016 Tacoma with 58K miles on it. It has a certified 10 year Toyota warranty and a 1 year parts and labor plus I bough a rider to cover electronics and such. I only drive 1.8 miles to work 1 way. I bought it in sept. 2019 and have only put 1800 miles on it. 400 on a weekend Cleveland outing. Less than 1 tank of fuel a month. So the reminders are telling me its due and the reality is It's not. The tires probably need rotated and replaced after the next 5 K Miles. Brakes at the same time. The dealer told me about the brakes. So Oil changes??? How often, And how many a year to keep my Warranty? I have started a CarFax file on my vehicle to continue to keep track of the maintenance. I am not a OCD person ,Its just I never had the opportunity to keep a history on a vehicle like we can today. My old file system was to wright the miles and date on the empty Oil Filter carton and staple it to the garage wall as a reminder. Now we have the internet. So my issue is I want to keep my warranty endnote find out I violated my agreement somehow and lost it.
    Thanks for the help,
    Ron

Drive it. Change oil every 6 to 8 months if you like doing so. Or once a year if not.

You can download the toyotaowners app or do it online. You are able to input anything you have done to it, and it has access to online manuals. Which in there will show oil change intervals for special operations. I will advise you to take the truck out in the interstate at least once a month and drive it around a while once its up to operating temps. You need to warm the oil up to prevent condensation.
As long as you follow the guidelines in the maintenance book, you will be fine as far as warranty goes.
Also note, oil change intervals are based on time or miles, whichever comes first.

Thank you. I do go on the interstate a bit. The condensation part I was not aware of. Another surprise for me was synthetic oil and I watched a Vid on tacoma oil change. WTH? Life use to be so easy. The time it took drain the oil was precisely the amount of time it took to have a beer and a cigarette.

Funny story about a recent oil change.. I bought a drain pan with high sides, as this 0-20 oil comes out at a high rate of knots. Well, the pan has this one spot on the bottom with a divot or odd shape.. you guessed it, I had it lined up perfectly and the oil hit the divot in such a way that it shot out over the pan sides in two directions. I had to laugh. At least I didn't get a mug full of it .

You can get by with 1 oil change a year if you haven't reached the mileage required, but no more than a year.

That’s one of the benefits of Fumoto-type valves when using modern, super thin, water-like oils. No splashing or mess.
Just hook up a hose to the valve and drain the oil from the pan directly into a jug or to the bottom of a drain pan.....

so i have a garage queen, 2007 xterra and my taco that i so far have 6500 miles on in one year of ownership- bought new end of april 2019. For the taco, which i drive way more than the xterra, i have decided to go to 6 month oil changes. at that interval, it's about 3000 miles on each change and i use synthetic. i have changed 2x so far, once at 1200 miles and recently at like 5500 miles or so. the manual says once a year i believe but double check but i don't like once a year changes. seems too long to wait.

my xterra, has 146k miles on her and have owned since she was brand new. synthetic on her too and 6 month intervals now. i take her mainly jsut around town for a 10 mile trip once or 2x a week. So condensation build up is my concern so 6 months it is. Only put 1,000 miles in 6 months on her. She's like new inside and out and mechanically. doesn't use any oil, no smoking, has tons of power. love the 4.0.

my DD, 2017 patriot 4x4, i do the same 6 month interval but she gets about 6000 miles per 6 months, maybe less. use syntetic there too.

    how do i keep track?????

since about 2007, maybe prior, i keep a text file/notepad on the pc with every maintenance i do. one file per car. i have the date, miles, what i did, any issues i came across doing it, where i bought the stuff to do it. i keep the receites in a binder for each cr.

example: (not for any of my vehicles above)

    3/16/2020
    6500 miles
    changed oil
5 quarts 0w-20 valvoline synthetic and xyz filter bought at oreillys
torque xyz ft lbs for drain plug
had issues getting filter off, used the filter pliers to remove. cap wouldn't work.

I literally have 35 pages of the above for my xterra. i even document wax jobs and mods.

    :)

don't need the internet. use windows notepad.
