Rugged Terrain tires

KO2, Ridge Grappler, Toyo OC RT, are hands down the top 3 tires for running on Taco’s.. Cooper, Goodyear’s.. are decent tires.. I heard big things from this new Toyo OC AT3 and very aggressive tread & look pattern, borderline hybrid tire

 

These are great, and weigh less than most.

 

I love my Toyo Open Country RTs. I couldn't decide between AT and MT so this made it easy for me lol. If I fell for a marketing tactic, so be it, but I am very happy with how they look, ride, and very minimal road noise from my stock tires.

 

FWIW, I have been running 255/80R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers for around 3,000 miles and I like them so far. Previously ran BFG KO2s and enjoyed them, but they are not sold in my current size. The RGs are as quiet and comfortable on the highway and just as capable off road as the KO2s. I did some sound decibel readings and the RGs are just as quiet as the KO2s (265/75R16). I don't see a lot of mud where I wheel, but I think the RGs clean out mud a little better than the KO2s.

I too wanted a hybrid, but one that was almost an M/T tire, not a street tire, like the Kevlars that were included with the Taco. This is why Duratracs are the best tire for the truck.

1) Best rain rating = Very important.
2) 3 peak snow designation = Very important to me, as they have been just as good as the designated winters (I gladly sold) that came with the truck.
3) Relatively quiet tire, considering the almost M/T thread pattern.
4) Great reputation that some of these new tires dont have (other than the KOs).

 

It's been over a month now, and although it isn't getting driven daily because virus, I've gotten a pretty good feel for the new tires.

Love them so far, they are quiet on the road, drive smooth, and feel solid and planted up to 135km/hr. Gravel and mud roads are no sweat - although it's easy to chew tracks and throw mud (left ruts up a friends driveway by accident). I've got them at 38psi right now and they seem pretty great balance between stiff driving and not shaking cavities out.

Acceleration might be a bit slower but not noticeable, certainly no different than the K02 I've had in the past. Braking is fine, no difference.
Over a 400km trip I ended up at 14 L/100km vs 13L/100km for the same trip with P255/70R17 Blizzaks. So added around 1mpg more.

They are harder to clean, but look better dirty - so there is that.

 

Love my Toyo Open Country R/Ts. Wear super well and does exactly what I need on and offroad.

I love the word “wank” when used appropriately.

 

I have had KO2'S, ST Maxx, and now the Dick Cepek EXP all in E load.
The KO2'S were ok, but really sucked in anything that even looked like mud and the wet weather traction really got bad after about 25k. They were very abrupt and rough riding (34F/30R psi).

The St Maxx probably has one of the best tread designs on the market, low noise, great off-road traction, good wet weather performance. They still ride pretty stiff, but not as bad as the KO2'S. They are heavy and I could really feel it in the overall performance of my truck. If I did hard core off-road trails they would have stayed on my truck.

The Dick Cepek EXP has a tread design that's close to the ST Maxx and the overall performance is very similar but without the weight penalty. I was surprised at how much better my truck performed when dropping 6lbs of rotational mass from each wheel. The sidewall is really stout for a two ply tire and is plenty for my type of use.
The EXP is quiet and rides so much better than the KO2'S or the ST Maxx.

Kenda Klever R/T in a 33/10.5. Far and away a better tire than the KO2’s I’ve been previously running. Also like them better than the Duratracs and ST Maxx that I’ve also ran in the last few years. Don’t really understand why so many people go with the KO2. It isn’t a bad tire but it seems like so many people choose them only because others are using them. Not a very impressive tire especially when things get slick. The Duratracs are a step up from the KO2 but they get loud as they wear. Liked the ST Maxx better than either of those but I like the Klevers even more. Now that I’ve tried the Klevers I’ll be sticking with these until something better comes along. They outperform all the above. And the 33/10.5 is a perfect size tire for these trucks.
