Either way. I was going to get out yesterday, but it was too windy still.

Any on here use a larger rod box/vault? I just snagged a Denver Outfitters 4 vault and am wondering if anyone has had issues with it interfering with the reception from the shark fin antenna.

I had the Dave Scadden Skykomish Sunrise pontoon, and bought a pump very similar to the Outcast Hurricane Air pump (maybe even the same thing rebranded... it sure looked like that) and it would pump up the pontoons in a few moments. I always had to top it off with a manual pump. Only thing is it's 12 volt so I'd just pop the hood and connect to the battery. Super fast and easy.

Hey guys. I recently bought an Echo Carbon XL 10' 3wt. What reel/line would you recommend on this for a dedicated nymphing setup? I used an old Redington Drift 3/4 (3.70 oz.) on it, but the whole outfit felt tip heavy. I'm fairly novice to nymphing so I wouldn't require seriously high-end equipment.

Reel doesn't matter as much since you're not going to need a really heavy drag.

I have an Orvis Recon 10' 3wt and an Orvis Helios 10'6" 3wt
I use a cheapo deluxe Taylor Flyfishing reel that balances them out fairly well.
But I plan on getting a Line Q full cage reel, And that's only because i'm normally nymphing with a mono leader setup.

20 ft 0x Rio Mono, Bloodknot , 15 ft 2x Rio Mono, Bloodknot, Sighter material (Orvis, Hanak, etc), Tippit Ring.

Then onto the tippit ring is where I match the stream, river, etc.

Let me know if you need any help.

That's all good advice. I agree, the reel doesn't matter a ton. I use about 25 ft of 20lb Maxima Chameleon for my butt section. One thing to consider is that a large arbor reel keeps the mono line for spiraling up as much. It still spirals, for sure, but the large arbor is a little easier to manage. I have an Orvis Hydros SL 2.

If you want something on the cheaper side but still quality, I'd go for the Orvis Battenkill. It's only $98. Only downsides are that it's a standard arbor and drag isn't sealed. I do a fair amount of fishing in below freezing weather...it'll lock up in those conditions. The Battenkill has a full cage, which will save you a ton of frustration with a tight line setup.

Thank you this definitely helps. I was looking at the Lamson Liquid as a budget reel. Large arbor, sealed drag, only $100. So you guys are both on full mono setups? Does this mean you're forgoing any kind of fly line, including the euro nymph options from Rio and Airflo? Or backing --> fly line --> 30+ ft. mono --> tippet section? Therefore keeping all your fly line on the reel, and only mono through the guides?

The Lamson will do everything you need, 100%.

    My setup is:

    Backing -->regular WF 5wt fly line --> 25ft 20# Maxima Chameleon --> 3ft 15# Maxima Chameleon --> tippet ring --> Yellow 12Lb amnesia --> Red 8 lb amnesia --> tippet ring --> tippet

Line to line connections are blood knots. Tippet rings get five turn clinches. All the fly line stays on the reel...unless I hook into fatty and it takes me for a ride.

I like a tippet ring on top and bottom of my sighter. That allows me to clip off the sighter, tie on some tippet, and use the mono-butt section just like a fly line. I'll do that if I'm mainly tight-lining, but I have some open water where I want to use and indicator. Sounds weird, but it works like a charm.

If you want to go deep down the mono-rig rabbit hole, go spend some time on Troutbitten.com. There are strategies of using the mono-rig for dries, tight lining, dry flies, streamers, and just about every hybrid style you can think of.

I have the Lamson Liquid on my 11.5’ 8wt switch rod that i use for salmon. It is a great reel for the price. Nice smooth drag, sealed, etc.

My Battenkill has been dropped in the ocean 3 times. :anonymous:

I just take the spool off and rinse it with freshwater. The drag still works fine. I can't kill it.
