rear TSB question

i have an 07 double cab. i was wondering if i should bother with the rear tsb recall. i'm not even sure what it is or what it's supposed to fix. any advice? i talked to the dealership yesterday and they said they'd look into, but should i even bother?

 

Are you still under the 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty?

It replaces your 3 leaf pack with a stiffer 4 leaf pack. A lot of Tacomas will bottom out when loaded at weights well below their payload capacity. the TSB solves that problem.

If you haven't noticed any bottoming out problems when loaded, don't bother with the tsb.

 

i'm not under the 3 yr/36k mi but i have the extended warranty. they're supposed to call me this week to let me know if it's covered.

 

Chances are it's not covered- The bulletin that outlines the justification/procedure says the 3ys/36K warranty only. The TSB is NOT a recall-It's a bulletin for the techs to use to repair hard to diagnose or common issues.

If you don't know what it is or if you "need" it....Why did you ask the dealership for it??

I'll say again- People complain about the "stupid questions" and mistrust that dealers/service writers show customers-It's because of stuff like this. Walking in and asking for stuff without reason and just assuming that everything is the way you think it is.

 

well that's y i asked. i didn't know what it was and i explained that i just wanted some info. i may be having problems with the rear leafs and, since i didn't know about the tsb, i wouldn't have known it could be fixed. you see where i'm coming from? i didn't tell them to fix it. i simply asked what it was and what it was for. i'm asking you guys if i need it, not the dealership.

 

The way I see you you are putting the cart before the horse. Asking the dealership about a TSB you know little to nothing about for a problem you may or may not have is just silly.
Asking "Have you as a dealership had a lot of complaints about the rear leaves in their truck?" and asking us "Have you folks had a bad ride and/or bottoming out with stuff in your truck?" would be a little more logical...There is tons of info about the TSB on this sight- Lots of folks have posted more or less the same question you did..and folks are more than happy to tell you about it...but asking the right question is important.

And you don't need to ask us...If you have a fucntional problem with the way your truck operates- You need to tell the dealer and work with them towards a solution. The TSB isn't an automatic thing-or it would be a recall and/or included in the all the new trucks. It's based on customers having problems.

 

see that's the thing. i didn't know it wasn't a recall. now, how would i have known it wasn't a recall if i didn't ask? you're correct i may have done it ass backwards but i still got my answer. all i wanted was info not a speech but thanks for your input.

 

I don't have a problem with you asking here (altho the subject of TSBs has been covered ad nauseam). We give everyone who asks plenty of information- Either links to other threads about it or tons of opinions.

Asking the dealer when you don't know much at all about TSBs or the problem- That's what irks me- Folks come here all the time with stories about how horrible and stupid dealers are-Imagine the stories they tell about customers.

Good luck deciding what you want to do with your truck now that you know a little about what you are asking for.

 

well i'm not bashing dealers in any way. i'm not really understanding why you went after me with that. all you had to do was give me a place to look with more info.

 

It was a general commentary-Most of what we hear around here regarding dealers is negative....There are reasons that dealers are usually skeptical of customers coming in demanding stuff....and your question to your local dealer is one of them.

There are literally 100's of threads about the TSB, what it does, why you might or might not need it, and the issues/successes folks have had. Going to the dealer with no clue about what you were asking for was kinda pointless-It's your truck- Put in the leg work before you waste their time. I'm not big "Go use search" Nazi...but it can be your friend if you do.

 

well that your opinion and your entitled to it. i figured the best place to go with a tacoma question would be a tacoma mechanic. excuse me if that's not the best way to get info.

 

it was also a spur of the moment kind of thing. i got my oil changed and thought about the tsb soo i asked what it was to see if i may have needed it. i had a question about my truck soo i asked the mechanic that worked on it. i didn't think it was a stupid question and i was asking the dealership to do anything other than give me info. why wait to get home and research stuff on here when i could ask the mechanic. now, the reason i posted this thread was to get the opinions of the people that already got the tsb. i wasn't expecting all this.

it was never a matter of what i wanted to do. it was a matter of knowing my truck and what a tsb was. now that i know, i reallize i don't need it. i don't haul anything heavy, therefore i have no problems with the rear springs.

 

I had this done, it was needed for my truck and I'm very pleased w/ results. Can answer w/o a side lecture if you still need.

 

i think i figured it out. i don't think i need it. i don't haul alot and i hope to get new leaf packs one day. especially if i get an ATV. thanks though.

 

I had my truck for a while before I got the TSB done. I wasn't a member of this forum at the time (didn't even know about it) so I had to do the legwork and stumbled across the TSB through the internet and contacting Customer Service. I don't haul stuff much, but it pissed me off when the truck bottomed out with a motorcycle in the bed. The dealer's first course of action was actually to cut me a deal on a Tundra! I ended up printing out the TSB and going back to the service department with that in my back pocket and explaining the problem. It does stiffen up your suspension quite a bit so if you like the nice smooth ride and don't haul anything, this may not be the best route for you.

I think Brunes was getting at is people just hear about these TSB's and expect their dealership to perform the work. If you're experiencing a problem with your Tacoma and find out there's a TSB to correct it, then you should have it completed. The work order when I got this TSB performed was a little over $2,000 (covered under warranty) so you can see why the dealerships are skeptical and want to make sure you truely need the work done. It's a service bulletin, not a recall.
