OME BP-51 Install Report and Height Adjustment

I’m running Firestone ride right bags with daystar cradles for when I load up the truck and to help with tongue weight when towing my travel trailer. Love the ride so far.

 

I partially joined the BP-51 club today! I just have them in the rear with ICON RXT leafs (option 2). OME 888 and 90021's in the front.

Been awhile since I posted any updates. Well, I'm running at a 15mm pre-load with HS 1/4" spacers on both sides. I do have a slight lean towards the drivers side, so I might remove the passenger side 1/4" spacer. Haven't decided yet. I bought the whole kit from HS off-road and it came with SPC upper control arms. I also started out with the HD leaf pack. Since my first install, I removed the leaf packs and removed the 3rd leaf to make them medium packs and that helped a lot with the stiffness in the rear. I also greased between each leaf to get rid of the squeaking. Been squeak free since.

However, I am getting some rather loud squeaking on the front passenger corner. Not sure what it is that is causing it, but it really only happens when it is cold out. Which makes me think it's a lubrication issue. Just need to find out what needs to be lubricated. I filled the boot on the SPC arms with grease, so it has to be something else. Anyhow, this is how she sits at 15mm pre-load and the 14/" spacers with medium duty leafs. Sitting on 285/75r16 tires, steel bumper with come up 9500 lb winch, lights, roof rack and DB rear bed cover for additional weight. The bumper along with the winch is ~200 lbs.

 

My kit is on order! Going to try to get it done 3/14 if it all arrives by then!

Can you’ll share a pro tire of the tool you used to adjust preload with? I can’t get mine to budge.

 

I have the OME one that you use with a spring compressor.

 

I just adjusted my preload a few days ago using this:

However it wasn’t the easiest thing to do. It took two people and some muscle. Two of these would easily get the job done but I only had one. A good wall mounted spring compressor would be the best.
Also I had the coilover removed.

 

All finished up!
I set my preload at 15mm driver side and 12mm passenger side.
Set all rebound and compression settings up 3 from the bottom to start.
I went with the Dakar HD leaf pack and SPC UCA’s. SCS Stealth 6 wheels with a 255/85r16 Cooper Discoverer.
I’m getting quite a bit of rubbing on the front outside rear fender plastic before the cab mount. I’m hoping a good alignment next week will help that.

So far I’m liking the ride quality a lot. Feels great on the road. Handling my added weight a lot better than stock.

I’ve got dual batteries, sliders and complete camper buildout in the bed so I’m lugging around some lbs.

 

I have the compressor but what are you using as a spammer tool?

The spanner tool is not made to adjust the preload to my knowledge only the compression and rebound adjusters.
It shouldn’t be hard to turn the collar if you loosened the hex head bolt and have the spring tension off.

 

this is the tool I have. Used with a wall mount spring compressor to adjust preload. The kit comes with 2 spammer wrenches for adjusting compression and preload.

Let's talk Compression and Rebound. I'm curious to see what everyone is running. It won't be apples to apples, since we all have different accessories. However, I think it would help to get some ideas and numbers out there for some guidelines. Let's list the following:

• Accessories that add significant
• Tire size and load rating (shouldn't have affect on the suspension but is good information as it could affect perceived ride quality)
• Pre-load settings on the front
• Spacers (if any) and what size
• Rear springs - Medium or HD
• Current compression and rebound setting front and rear
• What are you most concerned with regarding your suspension?
  • Whoops
  • Washboard roads
  • Sudden drops
  • etc
• Anything else you think would beneficial information

  • Headstrong 1/4 spacers on both sides (might be removing passenger side to get the front level. Currently, the passenger side is 1/4" higher)

• Suspension Wants:
  • The biggest (most) things I encounter on a daily are washboard roads with occasional drops (pot holes, small rock drops).

With my current setup, it rides "okay". Definitely better then a standard suspension, but not quite as good as my factory fox suspension on stock setup (trd pro) in the scenarios listed above. I think I can get it to ride the same as my fox setup, will just take some dialing in.

Any suggestions on comp and rebound for my current setup? Wondering if aftermarket bumpstops will help with the harshness of drops...

• Suspension Wants/Issues: I’ve had one minor rub since my last pre-load adjustment to 13mm.
• May adjust pre-load to 15mm when I rotate my tires but like the ride for now, it’s firm not stiff. I’m on dirt/gravel washboard roads with pot holes, about 40% off, 60% on road driving and in 4 wheel drive everyday.
• Wanted this suspension for a better ride especially while driving uphill over washboards with a load on and through potholes. Working great so far after about 1k miles on new KO2’s, glad I went with the C load tire.
• I don’t know what my current measurements are compared to the original stock setup. Neglected to check the height before the lift was installed. Truck looks pretty much level but on flat ground it’s got a slight rake front to rear.

 

Thanks for sharing. Sounds like we are running roughly the same size tires with you at 13mm and me at 15mm with 1/4" spacers. I do not have any rubbing issues except for one scenario: If I am backing up a hill and have my wheel turned to the left, I will rub on the drivers side. It is very minimal and nothing I am worried about since the situation doesn't happen often and the rub is very slight. Considered buying the 1/2" spacers and adding that to the drivers side only. This would address the taco lean without touching the suspension pre-load and should get rid of that minor rubbing. Then I could sell the 1/4" and 1/2" spacer to someone else to fix their lean.

As far as comp and rebound. I think I'm going to increase both on mine after I install my rock sliders. They came in yesterday and will add ~140 lbs to my truck. Really thought about just taking a day and playing with the comp/rebound settings and keep driving down my crappy washboard road to see where the "perfect" setting is for me. I might be chasing my tail though, if the E load tires are to stiff. I've always ran E rated, but I've always driven bigger trucks. And having 16" wheels, I do not have the option of C load tires.

I’ve only put 200 miles on my BP-51s so far but this is a copy and paste from my phone notes of my build.

I’m currently running the front preload at 15mm Driver and 12mm Passenger. All compression and rebound settings are set at 3 front and rear. (I’m going to play with the rear in the future it’s feeling a little boat like.)

Heading back to the alignment shop tomorrow for my second alignment since they didn’t get it right the first time at all. Truck pulls to the right and the steering wheel has to be kept at the 10:00 position to drive straight.

Some fender liner trimming will be needed.

As far as how it rides compared to the stock pro suspension it is night and day better after my added weight. I didn’t have a problem this the stock fox pro suspension before the added weight. I went with this kit because I wanted something that was equal to or better than the factory suspension ride quality with the additional weight added.

Thanks for the share. I was in the same boat. Knowing I was going to add weight and wanted greater overall height, the Fox suspension had to go. It really was a great riding suspension on a factory truck though, I'll give them that.

 

Pictured below is the bottom of the rear suspension. I ordered all the parts separately and don’t have any instructions. I attempted to put bottom into the axle bracket but it’s too wide. I got the fitment kit but don’t see how I can remove the rubber ends to make it fit within the bracket to bolt it. Like I said I don’t have any instructions and can’t find any online. Any suggestions?

 

You don't need those outside eye pieces. My kit came with them, but they 'were not installed. Looked like they could be pressed in.
