Oh also, airing the tires fixed the bump steer.

And... Shout-out to SimplyMuggle for the vinyl wheel kit!

Your mpg is going to be worse than the stock tire unless you installed the wormhole adapter on each tire and under your seat.

Think about it for three seconds, the new tires are heavier and significantly taller than the oem. Your speedometer & odometer are totally off and effecting the mpg calc.....even if you log it the old way.

I don't disagree with you at all and understood that 100% going in. (MPG)

But being unable to cruise at 65 w.o constantly downshifting wasnt expected.

I had that same issue with the oem tires and the taller, heavier 255s make it worse.
So far I love the look, off-road traction and the extra ground clearance but the handling sucks compared to the oem.

On my old pathfinder the jump from stock to 33x10.5x15 was great because that was the oem width on the higher models. For the taco we’re losing that half inch.
Going to try 35 psi and I guess chalk it so I don’t wear unevenly.

Your new tires might be heavier, but they are effectively lengthening your gear ratio. Do the math. You are travelling further per rotation of the drivetrain (what the speedo/odo reads, not road speed) which means you're getting better mileage than indicated (it's also why you should correct your speedometer and why it reads slower than you're actually going after the change to these tires). After I switched, my MPG's indicated dropped ever so slightly, then rose back to where they were as I slowed down my driving style and decided that I didn't need to get up to speed as fast as I was before. After correcting for the ODO discrepancy, I have gained MPG's on the highway because I am turning less RPM at any given time, which means less engine losses due to pumping, which means greater MPG's. So, think about it for a few more seconds, and realize that you can totally gain MPG's with this change if you drive conservatively.

Your engine will have to work harder going up hills, or when accelerating if and only if you try to match your previous rate of acceleration. Keep your foot out of the pedal and you will see your MPG's climb right back to where they were, and if you're really concerned about MPG's, slow down. These trucks are bricks and don't respond well to speed.

Or, maybe MT's are just magical unicorns that fart into the intake and give extra MPG's. You decide.

The autos are really geared long to be able to get good MPG's, especially the extremely long 5th and 6th overdrives. One side effect of this is that they were on the edge of driveable with the stock axle ratio. Now that the tire (and therefore overall gear ratio) is about 8% longer your truck has to cruise around at a lower RPM at any given speed which means it's making less torque and significantly less power, so it will frequently downshift to keep the engine from lugging. The most common solution for this is a regear (4.88's/5.29's) and/or tune. Being in a manual I've rarely noticed the engine letting me down on anything short of a literal mountain grade.

Yes larger circumference means longer distance traveled per rotation.
Your speedo, odo and computer are calibrated for the oem tires.

Either way do you really think adding more weight especially rolling mass to any vehicle could possibly help mpg?

Go for 40s, your tank will fill it itself.

Weight wil not help. Extra gear ratio does. If you drive like a loon, the weight will hurt more than the ratio helps. If you drive slow, the ratio gain will help more than the weight hurts. I know this because I observed it, on my own vehicle. I can't say it'll hold true on 35's, 37's, or 40's.

But hey, I'm lying about what I experienced I guess. :jerkoff:

Do you just do it by hand, or did you get your speedo recalibrated?

Manually, confirmed by GPS and (unfortunately) also radar. Turns out it's easy to multiply by 1.08

Just starting out, give me time
Does anyone have tall skinny tires with this eibach pro lift kit. I have the 255/85/16 Cooper's on mine and I am wondering what the actual total height is from ground to top xm antenna. Mine so far is at 64". I ask this because almost all the car washes and parking ramps around here are 70" max height and I would like to not go over that if possible. I do not have this kit yet but that will be the yay or nay factor. Thanks for any help.

Stock 19 off road double cab long bed with Cooper's on.

Has anyone had 265/75r16 ST Maxx’s and changed to 255/85r16 in the same tire? Any thoughts worth noting?

    See my 265/75 -> 255/85 experience below.

I also ran some ST Maxx in 255/85/16. As you know they’re surprisingly quiet for the tread aggressiveness, but so so heavy. I liked the KM2s more. Even though on pavement they rumbled the truck at off-idle speeds and they howled down the road, they performed awesome in the dirt. And imo look better. The ST Maxx ran small and didn’t look as cool as the KM2 :D

Here’s my dilemma with a true MT. I work with my truck (70% off road), but cover a lot of miles. I need a tire that can get ~50k miles and not cut my gas mileage too badly. I’m needing to run a taller tire than 265/75 without running 285/75. I want to run a different tire than ST Maxx next time around, but the options are so limited in this size.

My buddy has them on TRD Pro wheels, which are currently mounted on my truck. We both have 255/85r16 Cooper ST Maxx tires but I have the stock Offroad wheels. We swapped tires to try to figure out why I have so much wander at highway speeds. On his drive home (~1 hour) after we swapped he realized immediately that his truck was wandering on the highway and I have noticed that my steering is much improved with the TRD Pro wheels with the +13mm offset instead of the Offroads +24mm offset.

This size tire and the weight you’re going to be jumping up to will definitely cut your gas mileage.. food for thought!

Courser CXT! I've got 25k miles thus far and lots of tread life to go, great offroad performance, and if you drive the speed limit and don't try to race between lights your MPG's will be just fine. I got ~17 MPG on my commute this morning doing 3mi city drive>20mi 75mph interstate>5mi city drive in a hurry to get to work. On the same commutes taking my time I get over 20, and have pushed 24-25 by going 60 rather than 70. They're fantastic tires I wish more people knew about.

Interesting, that does make a lot more sense considering the offset. IMO the Trd pro wheels look better than the OR wheels
