I have a '05 regular cab Taco without intermitant wipers. I would love to have them. Can I simply replace the existing wiper switch with one having the intermitant function and have it work? Or do I need something else?

My '09 was a simple plug and play. My guess is your's will be the same.

It should be plug and play. All vehicles have the wiring needed for all factory options, just because it's cost effective that way building them all on the same line.

I'm sure there is a write up on here of someone doing it.

There's a write up. Check main menu links for Mods and Tutorials. You'll find the link for the Intermittent Wiper Mod there.

Incidentally, I've also got a 2007 that I'm planning to modify. The new wiper switch goes for about $130 or so from the dealer as well as on Amazon. Saw a used one on eBay for $79. Not cheap either way. I thought I'd check a couple of U-Pick-Em junk yards and see if I can score the switch for less. And as long as you're going to have to take apart the steering housing, you might want to look at the Cruise Control Mod at the same time.

    Of to the junk yard....

I went with Ebay used, I had a used Taco & figured a used wiper control would be a perfect match. Appx. $70 & 45 min. and all looks & works perfectly. Great upgrade for the price.

Did that for my 2003. Bought an intermittent wiper assembly for $99 at a mini truck salvage yard. The only tool needed was a phillips head screwdriver to remove the housing around the steering wheel. Installing the intermittent wiper was literally plug and play. Saved about $200 on the part alone. Best upgrade I ever made. That and getting a used Toyota CD player.

If you can find one at a junkyard, it’s totally plug and play to install. Phillips screwdriver...10 minutes. $90 vs. $350 dealership. Toyota should had that standard by 2003.

First thing I did on mine when I bought it. Didn’t even get the seat plastic off before I changed it over.
    Never understood their reasoning.
Guys in the shop were laughing when I tearing the truck apart before it was officially “mine”

Hard for me to decide what was my "best" upgrade. Intermittent wipers or Throttle controller. Both install in less than 30 min. Salvage yard wiper from ebay, less than $100 & Throttle controller from ebay, (9-Drive brand, shipped from China), also less than $100. (I'm not recommending the 9-Drive throttle controller as mine is a Sprint Booster, I have read the 9-Drive works well but don't know from experience). I'd hate to be without either of them.
