I agree the mortality rate is likely much lower than the 3.4% the WHO has stated for deaths / confirmed cases (obviously they know testing is limited so lots of people have it but haven't been tested). I think the problem is a big surge of sick elderly and previously sick people to the hospitals. Hospitals in this country are for profit, so they don't have tons of extra capacity. If you lose all the beds and ICU's to corona victims what about the usual people? Corona virus won't prevent people from getting injured or sick but it will make it impossible to help everybody. There's also been a lot of people with possibly permanent respiratory damage after recovering from it, which as a stereotypical Colorado scares me more than the mortality rate.

If we "flatten the curve" it keeps hospitals from getting overwhelmed and buys time for researchers to figure out treatments, vaccines, etc. No one is going to take those drastic steps on their own so the government has to step in.

I agree with personal freedom but only when it doesn't harm other people. You don't have the right to shoot guns randomly into your neighbors house because you might hit them. You also shouldn't have the right to go around licking doorknobs and coughing on old people during a pandemic.

For a long long time now (longer than our lifetimes) we've slowly been ceding our freedoms and granting more and more power to a government that was designed to be very limited, all under the notion that they will protect and provide. When we've allowed them to be big enough to give us everything we want, they'll be big enough to take everything we have. A frighteningly large amount of people are ok with this.

If you listen to podcasts "The Daily" did a great interview with a doctor from Italy. They are about 2 weeks ahead of us in terms of numbers if things keep growing the way they have been. The hospitals there are overwhelmed, they are running out of supplies - it's not just about testing. If people don't isolate themselves we'll be in the same boat. If it takes governments shutting restaurants down it will be worth it.

I still haven't seen @CO MTN Steve yet though. He must've located a large toilet paper stash so he's all set to remain indoors for a while

While I have been to Italy many times, I can't say I know much about their health care. I can say I work in healthcare here in the US. However, Italy has a socialized system. If is it like the NHS (UK), then it is generally close to being overwhelmed on a normal day. In a bad cold season, the NHS is totally swamped on most days. So... I am not surprised. Again, I am just surmising IF it is anything like the NHS....

What I am saying is..... apples and oranges are difficult to compare....besides both being round in shape, lol.

I came home with three 30 boxes and already had an 18 pack last Friday. I had to replace one of the 30 boxes after Saturday night.
