Ambulance plunges into Kennedy Lake on West Coast of Vancouver Island

An ambulance from Tofino has plunged into the water of Kennedy Lake off a dangerous part of Highway 4. Ground search crews from Tofino and Port Alberni are searching the shoreline for survivors, and a Cormorant helicopter from 442 Search and Rescue Squadron in Comox is conducting an air search.

The ambulance left West Coast General Hospital at approximately 4:30 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 19) after transporting a patient from the West Coast community of Tofino. At 7:30 a.m. Port Alberni RCMP received a call that dispatch could not reach the two paramedics in the ambulance, RCMP Sgt. Kevin Murray said.

"An ambulance has been observed in the water and they are conducting a search of the shoreline and immediate area to ensure no one was ejected from the vehicle and is still alive," Murray said.

The ambulance went down a 60-metre (200-foot) embankment and is thought to be resting in nine metres (30 feet) of water. "It's a significant embankment," said Murray, who is familiar with the area.

A highway worker is thought to have noticed damage to trees adjacent to the highway, and further spotted the ambulance in the water.

They're not sure. Could have been a "fall asleep at the wheel" type thing, since they got called out at 1:40am, and cleared the hospital at 4:20am. The ambulance was found at 8:45am.

Two bodies found after ambulance plunges into Kennedy Lake on Vancouver Island



The bodies of two paramedics have been found at Vancouver Island’s Kennedy Lake Tuesday, after their ambulance went off the road and plunged into the water.

BJ Chute, spokesperson for Ambulance Paramedics of BC, confirmed the deaths by phone to The Province after hearing from members at the lake, though the RCMP have not yet confirmed that the bodies have been recovered. He did not know the victims identities, but said he was catching a plane to the scene Tuesday afternoon.

Police said dive teams were at the scene after searches were conducted by rescue crews and a Cormorant helicopter from its base at Comox.

Port Alberni RCMP received a call at about 7:30 a.m., asking for help to locate an ambulance that had left West Coast General Hospital to return to Tofino, but had been unreachable, Sgt. Kevin Murray said Tuesday.

After a highway-maintenance worker spotted the path of a car veering off the Pacific Rim Highway, he said, further search revealed the ambulance had indeed gone off the road and was now submerged.

The stretch of highway that hugs Kennedy Lake is “very narrow and winding,” Murray said.

 

Not good.... Seems like the whole service is pretty disturbed about this. We're all over worked and some become exhausted, and we all run late night calls...

Definitely sad.... They were most likely early 20's, too.. as that station is a starter station...

Shitty deal all round. People really have no clue the shit we have to go through to deal with their dumbass sore toe at 0300.

Edit: And if you tell dispatch you need a break and a coffee, and they don't like it... they can suck it!

 

True that. There's been times that we've had to tell dispatch that no, we're not returning a patient home from another city cause we're running hour 36 on 4 hours sleep.

I wasn't in the service during the strike, but they were legislated back to work, while voting on a contract offered by the government. They must have known what the results were going to be (98.9% NO)...

Though, the strike really screwed me up... I'm working as an EMR right now and wasn't planning on it. I went to school to be PCP in January of 09 and finished my in-class portion April 22 (the strike started April 1).. Soo, that meant my practicum was put on hold, until the strike ended. I just finished my last precepting shift a few weeks ago, and I'm still working on getting all of my competencies signed off....

Because our PCP stuff was put on hold, we all demanded that we get issued EMR certificates so we can somewhat get on with our lives, while waiting...

And that's why I'm EMR. Kinda sucks when you go to a call and your patient is unconscious and needs an IV of D10W and all you can do is squirt sugar into their mouths even though you've been trained to do IV's and D10, and have done it before...

AHHHHHH I HATE BC!

 

Wow, that's even worse than I heard. I know we're getting taken over by the province right now, so it's a huge fuster cluck. Thankfully our EMRs have been pretty good about getting in for their EMTs, just the usual bureaucratic shit they have to deal with.

Currently very few places are hiring due to Alberta taking over, and god are they making a mess of everything.
