When you have more air pressure you are putting more force laterally into your bead/rim junction. So despite what you say, having more air pressure is actually better for keeping a tire on a rim. That is why beads blow when people air down, not when they have 40 psi in them. When there is less air pressure and you have a wider tire in there the more it wants to jump the bead. Basically, you have a tire that wants to be 1" wider than it is on the rim.

But whatever. Do what you want.

You're misconstruing what I typed. Of course a higher pressure will keep the tire on better than the lower pressure, but thats not what we we're talking about. You are the one that brought in airing down. When comparing apples to apples, the same tire at the same aired-down pressure but on different wheel widths, the narrower wheel will hold the tire on the bead better.

It might be sketchy to run that wide of a tire on that narrow of a wheel on the street but once again thats not what we're talking about. You said you wouldn't air down the tire, but you said that because you are misinformed.

Here's my final comment on this topic... there's not one correct answer. Per your recommendations, I did go exploring on pirate: https://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/gen...2779-wheel-width-affect-tire-performance.html

It's so case by case depending on rig, tire, wheel, and where you are, that there's definitely no for sure in either direction. I will definitely say you're right on the being aired up with too narrow of a wheel will cause more crowning. That totally makes sense and I missed it your point in your first post.

On airing down... maybe it holds on better, but probably depends on vehicle weight and terrain. I know from my experience with bikes that too wide of a tire causes more pinch flats and definitely jumps beads more often at lower pressures, especially when leaning the sidewall over.

All in all, I still wouldn't run them but I do agree they look good.

Also, GTFO with that GVWR comment. If you put a yard of gravel in the back of your truck you'll be over GVWR too :D

There is a distinct difference in bead pressure based on wheel width. When mounting my own tires onto bead locks, a thinner wheel is significantly harder to mount on because of how much pressure you have to squish the tire but once set, that bead holds even at 0 psi.

Compare that to say a 9-10” wide wheel, super easy almost no base bead pressure

    Well...kind of.

With the long travel and giant fiberglass, yes for sure. If I could go back to my icon mid travel and 285’s...no. I’d leave it small.

35x12.5x17 on stock sport rims 7.5 wide at 5psi in sand hollow. How you wheel makes a big difference and the slower stuff you can go down lower for.

Now in Moab I was moving a bit faster and we were having fun at the dunes and I sent it a little too hard but didn't pop a bead at 10 psi

Now let's see how these 37s on a 9 inch wheel like lower pressure

Recently finished installing a ToyTec BOSS 2.0 lift and 35" BFG KM3s. Based on my pre and post-lift measurements it's about 3" in the front (I'm stock other than the lift so no added weight).

After getting the new tires put on I noticed they get very close to the UCAs, although 4Wheel Parts said they checked it at full droop and thought it was close but acceptable. I have Method Roost wheels which are 0 backspace/offset. So I decided to give a set of 1.25" wheel spacers a try.

I'm in a pickle cause the spacers just make the truck look so badass but now if I hit a bump while turning I rub right where the punch weld was hammered down (see photo).

Is there any way to correct this and keep the spacers? Thanks!
