Actually, you can text handsfree with carplay for the most part. You can say "hey google", text (insert name) "(insert message)". Also, having android auto does not limit the function of your hands free texting with the car. I can do both!!

Do you have links/documentation on this? I'd love to not need wires and actually get to use the qi wireless charge the truck came with. All i could find is that the HU has to be android auto wireless compatible.

You mean "Hey Siri" for Carplay.... Android Auto would be "Ok Google"

    Wireless Carplay Dongle

The price ranges from like $90-$160 and ratings are all over the place on them. They are the 1st Gen dongles so you may want to wait for 2nd Gen or if Toyota decides to turn it on as the truck has everything it needs to do wireless carplay already built-in.... they just chose not to do it.

Apple will not allow voice control outside of the respective app using it except for its own voice control (Siri). For example.. you cannot say "Ok Google directions to Toyota of Tacoma" however once you are in Google Maps you can then hit the mic and say "Directions to Toyota of Tacoma".

Now... I have not tested it.. not sure if you could say "Hey Siri, get directions to Toyota on Google Maps" I am thinking it would not.. but I will try it.

Interesting! Fortunately, I do not have any apple devices. But I figure siri can do that. I have heard apple maps are not as good as google maps

I have both Android and Apple... I like both but I have to say the simple easy interoperability of Apple ecosystem is pretty amazing. I own both PC and Mac, I tell everyone it is due to my work but at heart I am just a techie and love all things technological in nature.

Apple maps are getting better but they have a long ways to go to catch up with Google. I use Google Maps in carplay.

I have a mac book for work, but would be fine with a full windows/linux env. I also love my tech!

So bottom line, what years & trims have a GPS/navigation map screen standard in the head unit that doesn't need a cell phone. How do you update the maps in the stock head unit and is it free, or do we need a subscription?

I read 7 pages and still haven't found out if I can add Maps to the head unit of my 2020 off-road the 8-inch touchscreen. I would like when I crank my truck whether my phone is in my pocket, or left in my house, that I see some type of map / navigation system. Can I download an app to it. It doesn't even have to be the greatest damn map in the world just something!

No you can't add it to your head unit (if you don't already have it).

Thanks. But that is ridiculous that I have the map button with no way of using it

And the limited amount of apps with the apps button. It's should have way more features than it currently does.

I also find it ridiculous. It wouldn't have stopped me from buying the truck, and I love having Google Maps in satellite mode when driving, but I 100% agree with you. It would be nice to have an onboard nav system that popped up whenever you pushed the physical button on the head unit labeled "Map" without having an external device connected (wired or otherwise).

Not to open up this can of worms, again. But I did honestly give the built-in maps a chance, what I found out is that it is very clunky, it has to download route information so if YOU have no cell signal it has no cell signal either. The interface is well over a decade old, I have a 10 year old Garmin that has a better, easier-to-use interface and GUID and from everything I can tell that once the year of map assistance is over the map is worthless as there is no SD card interface that I can find (2020, my dads 2016 seems to have one).

Overall if you like it, that is great.. seriously I commend your patience with technology. If I could uninstall it I would as I believe it slows down the start up of my head unit.. all I need is a screen for Car Play.

When I got my 2020 TRD Off Road I too thought I had navigation. I played with that "map" button for over a week. And once I finally realized I didn't have built in navigation I was steamed. So I resorted to Apple maps and Google maps via CarPlay.

And in time I came to realize that built in navigation is clunky and out of date. Sister in-law has it. I absolutely enjoy Google Maps for navigation. Rolling down the road with satellite view on is amazing. And with Google Maps it's the most up to date and advanced navigation system on the planet.

I am now glad my truck came without the navigation package. It's clunky and out of date junk that I didn't have to pay for.

EDITED TO ADD: You can use the "map" button with Google maps, Apple maps, Waze maps, and all the other map/navigation packages.

CarPlay is all I use. It handles navigation, XM radio, Pandora, Bandcamp, It provides a nice graphical interface to a lot of apps.
