Oil Plug gasket

I saw someone in another thread metion changing this out each time you change the oil. Is that really neccesary? I had an '87 mustang with 145K on the same oil plug washer.

 

I guess you have to get them through the dealer?

 

i have changed mine out once just was leaking a really small amount took the old one off ran up to autozone with a different vehicle and got a new one

 

I replace mine on every oil change. Last time at the dealer I bought 5 filters and 5 washers.

 

I have changed my oil every 3000 miles on my truck. I have 99700 miles on it and I have never changed the gasket at all. Never changed it on any vehicle I have ever owned. Its not necessary in my opinion unless you notice it leaking.

 

On a sperate note, is there a certain site you guys recommend for ordering toyota oil filters from online?

 

I replace it every O.C.
I figure the Drain Plug torque specification takes into consideration the compressibility of a new sealing ring. Aluminum work hardens so It's my guess you're probably over torquing things a bit by using the same sealing ring over & over. JMO

You can always put a little silicone around the plug just in case.

 

The gasket never came off one change & figured out finally it was stuck to the bottom of the pan, actually there were two on there oopsie.
Now just one.

 

I am not sure I have ever looked up the torque specs on a drain plug. I can't imagine breaking out the 'ol torque wrench for a oil change.

 

You should ALWAYS torque your drain plug!!! My right arm is perfectly calibrated for such things as this...

Oh and im on the same gasket since I've had the truck (5 oil changes)

 

Usually change the washer every 4 or 5th oil change

 

im on my i think 10th oil change with the same one and its just now starting to leak a bit ill put a new one on for the next O.C.

 

I torque everything I can't tell you how many bolts I broke over torquing.

 

you would probably need a 1/2" drive breaker bar to accidentally snap the drain plug. That thing is pretty big.

I just use a small ratchet and snug it up, never had a problem.

 

Oh yeah I know I have however striped out a drain plug over torquing.
