People are still talking about investing in cruise lines LOL

The biggest market demographic boomers just saw their investments take a double digit haircut and the last few years cruise ships have proven time over time to be floating petri dishes.

Who knows maybe next summer things get back to normal, but a lot of ordinary cruise line goers are being materially impacted by this virus and may have second thoughts about taking a cruise this summer.

Yeah for sure. Gotcha now. :)

Yeah that would be awesome. Problem being, Ford's will be different than Tesla's which is different than GM's, etc. etc. Everyone runs on the same(within reason) petrol/diesel. At least that's what I foresee.

I didn't chase prices when I was in my mazda. Before that I had a Jeep and now the Tacoma, I'll do what I can at least.

I would be wary of investing in the cruise lines. Travel will pick back up eventually but certain demographics will probably be more hesitant to book trips for the next few years. It wouldn't surprise me to see the current operators declare bankruptcy, wipe out the stock value, and then get bought out by private equity for pennies on the dollar and taken private.

Exactly the reason we've not seen any movement in battery-swaps; while technically possible, market forces prevent such standardization.

Tesla , great !! There will need to be national standards for charging etc.
No one seems to talk about the fact that if a RURAL Tesla owner has a problem if they do not live in LA , they need to have it shipped to a major city to have it serviced . This is VERY expensive , especially if for a minor problem !!!
At least Ford electric cars have a problem they can be taken to a local dealer !
At least Ford and GM will have local service !!

The Tesla growth narrative is dead, but like cryptos the stock price will defy gravity.

I’m not worried about this summer or even next. I know I’ve seen similar things happen in the market in the past and missed out on great opportunities to buy a good company for extremely cheap because I listened to the “naysayers” as it were; then kicked myself in the rear for it later whenever I realize the returns I could have had if I would have just held true to what I already knew.
Cruise line’s are billion dollar businesses. They are affordable for middle class Americans and a great vacation getaways for lots of people.
People always forget about the past and history always repeats itself.
It won’t be long and people will start cruising again. I wouldn’t be surprised if because of current circumstances that the major lines release a proactive cleaning plan to prevent infections agents and viruses in the future.

especially after the other random things that have spread onboard. Most of them aren’t necessarily lack of cleanliness, more so people lacking hygiene (done a few cruises and you see people walk right to the buffet all the time without proper Sanitizing or hand washing)

Cruises have always been a cheap method of vacationing, as opposed to a hotel on the beach, etc. There might be some changes but probably nothing major.

I do feel bad for the people who retire on board and are free floating now.

That's not stopping any company from doing it. If Tesla, Ford, etc. said "Hey two batteries", and you could DIY the swap at home, that would be fine. There's so many other problems.

    1. Batteries are damn heavy. My wife's camry is only a few hundred pounds lighter than my tacoma - that's all battery.
    2. These batteries are not AA batteries - the voltage is nothing to joke around with, so let's not trust the average joe with that maybe.

Standardization be damned. There's a lot to a battery hot swap.

Good point, but that's also assuming that this isn't specialized techs doing work on electric vehicles. Better with Ford. But Tesla is also growing as an automaker.

If I went on a cruise it would be self loathing. Drink in the sun all day, nap, stuff my face with food. No thanks, I'll spend a bit more and take a trip to an island instead. My in-laws are big fans of St. Martin, and now so am I.

Interested in the investing info - may begin to invest in the near future with a small amount so learning by seeing what y’all have to say is helpful!

As far as batteries I would say if they become the next fuel source (not hydrogen fuel or another storage system) there would be a kind of model designation and battery manufacturers would fit their tech into the model just like any other battery we use. I’d imagine power industry leaders are keeping an eye on how to prolong their dynasties with passenger vehicles.

    Beginner here as well.

Play the stock market with fake money first. Then try real. Investing is about long term, 10, 15, 30 year returns. Day trading is about...well...day returns. For starters, use either Vanguard or I use betterment - it's an interface to vanguard and they take an extra cut, but for me right now it's worth it for my IRA. You'll get ETFs and Index funds, etc. But, for actual stock to stock trading with manual input, I used to use Robin hood when I tried to do it but haven't been doing that recently. There are plenty of platforms.

Good luck, just keep reading here, everywhere - it's a lot at first but you'll get there, then you'll realize you don't know much still, and you'll learn more :p

Context of discussion was that a substantial barrier for adoption of pure-electric vehicles is the ability to quickly refuel a vehicle while on a trip. (*)

Home DIY swaps have nothing to do with that.

(*) One of the thought-experiment proposals involved semi-automated modular replacements, which would require a relatively common battery platform. That is just one of the many factors making the concept infeasible.

We were out camping all week and I walked back into this...

Now what to buy for long-term? In my opinion it's all about the blue chips. If somebody actively trades I do think cruise lines could make some money
