Painting CMC

    So I just got My CMC and was wondering what everyone else did to paint the inside of the plate. I ended up just spraying a ton of paint in there to hope it covers all the bare metal, just don’t want to have to re do it due to rust down the road?

    That's what I do to every CMC I've done so far, it's really your only option. You can't paint it beforehand because it'll burn off and/or contaminate the weld. There are usually enough access points/holes in the cab mount to get a fair amount of coverage of the inside. I've redone some CMCs and after cutting off the previous work you can tell they didn't even bother trying. Surface on the inside of the plate will turn into a more serious problem if you don't at least try to mitigate it.

    Yea I took some pictures to be able to see in and it looks like I pretty much covered it. I was just curious what others were doing. No one ever talks about it but seems spraying the life out of it is what everyone else is trying to do.

    If I end up having to do a cmc, I'll give it a try for sure. Still have a can on hand after painting the sliders with it.

    Great info here fellas. I've been an amateur grinder...I mean...welder for 20 years now. I didn't know about either one of these products. I've got a Marlin Crawler cam tab kit I've been meaning to install and may as well do the CMC while I've got sparks flying. I will try out one of these products when I do. Thanks!

    Do you have a MIG, TIG, or both? What AMP rating does your machine go to?

    The Steel-It can has 316ss in it. Have not read up on the 3M stuff yet.

    $41 3M 05917 , Zinc Based Aerosol Coating, Resists Weld Spatter, 12.75 oz Net Wt/361 g
    3M 05917 is basically zinc powder in an aerosol solvent. The intention I guess (I'm not a chemist so take with a grain of salt) is that the remaining coating and melted zinc in and on the weld is essentially galvanizing. I would guess the stainless stuff is similar in that it melts in alloying compounds while you're welding to make the weld corrosion resistant.

    I've got an old Miller 211 (not the new, updated one). It runs 110/220V and I get good penetration on .25" when I plug it in to the dryer plug!

    Been looking at a the multiprocess Esab Rebel 205 with AC/DC TIG capability to get better at it and build some exhaust parts, but have yet to plunk down on one.

    I just blast away with primer and paint. If you’re still worried about it, after it’s dry spray fluid film in there every once in awhile to help prevent rust.

    I welded the kit on with the Miller Diversion 180. TIG only. Right at the 180 amp setting. Used 3/32" rod and 1/4" rod. 309.

    MIG would have been more maneuverable and easier over all, due to the wire feed.
