09 4X4 automatic transmission

I am trying to understand why my truck went to hell after doing some brodies in the mud. I was coming home after a rainy camping trip, when I saw a nice flat spot of mud I couldn’t resist and did around 10 donuts. I pulled out onto the highway going around 50-60, I noticed my truck was trying to slow itself down sorta like not enough fuel was getting to the engine. I pulled out onto a side road and heard a light searing whistle type of noise. I then pulled off to the side and my truck was driving in neutral and jolting in park and wouldn’t go into reverse (in fact it was driving forward in reverse). Trying to make it home the truck wouldn't go over 40 MPH and I had to stop and get it towed. I am really just trying to find and explanation on what could have happened. I’ve been told the engine and transmission are practically bullet proof. I am at around 113,000 miles and around 15,000 miles ago I drained my Transmission fluid instead of oil and had to replace it so I figure it was good on fluids.

 

I've done thousands of donuts and haven't blown a tranny, does seem odd that it just shit the bed hard after playing in the mud. But like everything else there's always a few lemons.

 

Wow, sorry to hear this. I have done lots of donuts, lots of fun. Sounds like your transmission shit its self, something is all busted up inside of it now. Might want to plan on a full rebuild. Welcome to TW, good luck with your truck.

 

When you move the shifter through all the positions, does the dash light up correctly with each position?

 

I noticed it would with neutral and drive I think it did with reverse but not positive. It is in the shop now.

 

so, its bulletproof for umm, driving... not trying to be a dirt drift king... lol

 

Apparently, Off-Road edition did not exceed expectations sadly.

 

The park/neutral switch(Also called a prndl switch) lets the ECU know what the shifter position is and controls the transmission accordingly. If the switch got water in it and is telling the ECU wrong things, weird things could happen.

 

It did do it’s expectations off road. It’s not TRD offroad 10 donuts edition

2wd unless it got stuck cause I was using 4wd earlier but am not dumb enough to leave it in 4WD. No lights were on the dashboard even made sure I had my lockers off.

 

i mean, offroad is rated for slow driving on non paved roads. Nobody said it was meant to spin the rear axle at friggin highway speeds without any traction in a mud pit, that will ruin the rear end of almost any passenger vehicle. The tacoma isnt a race car or a dune buggy, its not meant to be beaten at anything but low speeds and definitely not meant for burnouts and donuts. Geez man, youre askin a lot from a sub 40k utility pickup thats not made for baja freakin warrior stuff. lol

 

hey, you deserve every bit of teasin you gon get here man. You expectin a lil pickup passenger vehicle to be some kind of a offroad 4x4 monster... It blows me away how some kid will buy a 1990 chevy 1500, slap wheel spacers and a rough country ass lift on it, and then get mad when something breaks the first time he does 45 on a railroad track to make his girl bounce... its like, my dude, what the heck man. People amaze me.

 

I get that but it’s a yota and some people treat it like it is one. Two other road warriors told me how they do their lovely donuts with no problems.

Edit:
@Connorklan when you get it back, crawl underneath and follow the shift cable to the tranny. The prndl switch is on the opposite side.
If something like this happens again, soak that switch with WD-40. Make sure you get between the switch and the tranny as well.
Move the shifter through it's settings and it usually frees things up
