Building a 10.5" SBR as a range toy. Pretty set on 5.56 just because I don't want to deal with the price on 300 blackout and I already have a ton of ammo. What do you guys think about a pistol length gas system vs a carbine length?

Carbine length all day, if you’re concerned about reliability go with 11.5” but stick with carbine length.

Zero reason to go pistol length gas in a 10.5" 5.56. Carbine gas length, 100%. That barrel length was designed to be ran with a carbine length system.

Gonna mirror what the other guys said, carbine all day. If it ends up violent/gassy play with buffer weights but that gas system on a 10.5 to 11.5 barrel length is optimal.

I understand most will probably say "build an AR" vs buying one... But it's $30 more to buy an assembled upper and lower vs buying a build kit and a lower.

The reason I tell people to build rather than buy is to be able to upgrade and select components individually. H2 buffers rather than factory carbine ones, better triggers, decent grips from the get go

i bought a complete bcm upper with bcg and CH and then pieced together my lower with my choice of stock, buffer, buffet spring, lpk Kit, trigger etc. Did the same thing on my pistol build as well.

That seems to be the smart move. The upper requires more tools/"gunsmithing" than the lower, and the lower is where you gain the most little ergonomic gains outside of the CH and hand guard accessories.

I bought my upper assembled cause I wasn’t trying to fuck with no gas system and shit lol “built” my lower cause it seemed simple enough and I’d know how it all works. But assembled sometimes isn’t much more...atleast with PSA.

It’s like trucks, people like accessorizing them with things they don’t need or don’t know how to use. Generally speaking, even if you pin them into a corner with logic, the response will be “it’s my money, I can do what I want,” so...whatever, but that’s usually why people go the other way and build.

    Yeah.
I assembled my first 2 pistol builds with complete uppers, but I wanted more choice on the components for a higher quality build, specifically a high-quality barrel. There are a few tools you need, but it not a lot. The gas system had me a bit concerned before I built one, but honestly it is pretty simple to get lined up.

Yeah, a few good tools make it easier than you'd expect, but that's still more investment than the basic stuff the lower requires. A BEV block, torque wrench, and some creativity will get you through the upper, though a vise is best. Reaction rods are another option.

I’ve tested several brands of M855 and M193 over the last few years and IMI is the most accurate brand in both.

WTB a Barrel... where do you buy your barrels???
I’m specifically looking for a quality but affordable 5.56 10.3” or 10.5” pinned A2 FSB CHF 1:7 medium/govt/heavy profile carbine gas length...
