Do you have a third gen? I thought the opening above the drivers head was an interior climate sensor? I’m sure I’m wrong though.

LOL, you may very well be right. I just assumed it was the mic given it's location. Time to break out the manual.

Just looked at mine and there's nothing but solid plastic where the mic should be. I would expect there to be a few holes at least. Still need to look in the manual.

I think the mic is actually behind the holes built into the little cubby. In my case there was a piece of foam and I left it and stuck the Kenwood mic in. No conference call issues or anything.

Yes it's inside there, it's a small little rectangle piece with foam around it. It comes out easily if I remember right

Thanks. This means the mic can be replaced without dropping the headliner, right?

Yes. Just take down the overhead console. You can tuck the new mic wire in the headliner and a pillar without having to remove any of it. Then just snake the wire under the dash over to the radio

I sincerely apologize if I'm hijacking this thread; however, I wanted to ask if anyone installed the DMX9705S instead of this unit? The 9705S appears larger. I've been tossing around various units and can't decide which one. I've looked at the Android based models (JOYING, Dasaita, etc) and the "popular" models (Sony, Kenwood, Alpine). The Chinese models all seem much larger. When you compare a Joying or Dasaita to the Kenwood 905S (OP's unit), the Kenwood seems much smaller. I know me, and my OCD will get the best of me and it'll be like buying that 50" television, getting it home, seeing there's still room, and then wishing I'd gotten the 65".

Has anyone installed a larger Kenwood unit? Do you have pictures what it looks like in our Tacos?

    Thanks.

I will admit I wished my screen was larger, but all the bells and whistles make it worth it over Entune. I wanted the Alpine version, but didn't like how the screen sat in front of the dash so I didn't go that route. I have not really looked at the android based ones. I assume the screen size on the Kenwoods are they way there are due to the size of the box behind the screen, but it would be nice for a larger one.

Today i was able to successfully get wireless android auto to work with my Galaxy S9+. It was a pain in the butt and it took trial and error, but I got it to connect. It is slow to connect, but once connected it works.

If you try and can't get it, the best thing that got me going in the right direction is to remove your phone from the head unit. Then pair it back with the head unit and for me this is when the android auto app began to show up as a source without the phone having to be connected via usb.

Update: Now that I have gotten to use this during my commute; although it does work, it is real buggy. I think the problem is that it requires the wireless and Bluetooth to be on, so I think the phone is trying to connect to nearby wireless signals that is causing hiccups.

Waze worked great. Only thing that did not work is that it won't tell you how long the commute is or what time you will arrive, just states no network connection.

Spotify worked at the beginning, but the eventually stopped playing and wouldn't restart until you skip 5-6 songs.

Lastly, on my 30 min drive my battery went from 100% to 92% so just to give everyone an idea of how much battery usage is used with wireless AA

    Too much.
I want to update this thread with a few observations:

    1. Wireless AA is working better for me now since updating my firmware on the headunit
    2. Wireless AA works better with the newer updates (the OnePlus updates its OS pretty regularly)

    Stereo still sounds great.

Wish there was a bigger screen though......

anyone investigate how to change the splash (intro) screen when the excelon boots up? I have the DMX906S model but figure they would be similar in that feature.

Someone on here had made a kit a while back, but I'm not sure he still does.

The 905 mic does pick up heavy rain sounds, but I've never gotten a complaint on background noise. I mounted it in the OEM spot after removing the stock mic.

I'll ask again. Why is it that the OEM mic doesn't work with aftermarket head units?

No idea. A hunch would be proprietary wiring or some such nonsense.

Previous reply is correct. Proprietary plugs and wiring where the kenwood and other units is a normal headphone jack.
