Raise the Seat in a 2nd Gen

Anyone ever raised the seats in their 2nd Gen Tacoma?
My wife and are both pretty short people. I wanted to raise the seats up about an inch and a half to two inches. I do not want to get a booster seat or any extra padding to put on the seat.
What I was thinking of doing was putting some sort of metal spacer underneath the seat where they connect to the floor, however after looking at the seats more carefully I realized that the front bolt is at an angle on the raised angle part of the floor.
Has anyone ever fabbed up a piece of metal to raise the seats? I know you can get metal spacers for Jeeps for this purpose but that is a straight shot, not this angle stuff.
I am thinking of trying to find a custom metal shop to see what they say, but I figured I would check on here first because I imagine a metal shop would charge me an arm and a leg for what I want to do.

 

just put a pillow on the seat then get some seat covers and put it over it

 

I guess you missed the part where I said I don't want to put a booster seat or add any padding to the seat.

 

I think I saw a DIY for raising the seat - it involved removing the (I think) 4 bolts holding it to the sliding tracks and adding a few washers between the seat and the tracks.. you may need longer bolts depending on how high you want to go (if the bolts can be changed, don't remember..)

 

I've never understood why the seating position is so low in Tacomas. It does not feel like a truck seating position.

I had two put to thick washers from Toyota under the rear of my passenger seat to raise it enough for my subwoofer under the seat. No problems but that only raised it maybe 1/4". You wanting to raise it 1.5" to 2" higher is pushing it.

 

I don't see how raising the seat an inch and a half or two inches would be any different than someone who is a lot taller than me sitting in the seat as far as the air bags are concerned.

I think you are right, the vehicles are designed for all sizes, so raising the seats 1-2" should not result in death upon a violent crash.

My personal opinion is that maybe a 1" increase would be better, it gives a slight boost, without changing much.

Don't quote me on any of this, I am just sharing a totally uneducated (in this field) opinion!

 

for whatever spacer you make, for the front, make it long with two holes next to each other, bolt whatever you need to into each hole and the seat wouldnt move forward or backward, just up...

 

Great point...but the concerns about changing the design of the seat mount is valid. Spacers in the front won't do much as it's not flat on the floor anyway...it's on the forward edge of stiffener in the floor... the rear will lift the seat anyways.

Be sure to lengthen the bolt so you get full thread engagement... at least three full threads protruding from the nut on the far side. While it may not need it using grade 8 will give the maximum margin possible for a non-engineered mod in a safety-critical area.

 

I lifted mine in the back and up front. Same grade bolts as original & long enough to go through. The front is tricky and if you wanted to take it up further the a bit more modding of the actual bracket that is bolted to the cab is required.

If you wanted to get anal about it you could sinch it down on the other end of the cab with a large washer and nut

Is it as safe as the original design? probably not

Is it a safer mod than say -- lifting your truck? Depending on high the lift is and what type of accident you are involved in Maybe so

Is it worth getting your panties in a wad with a guy who is just asking a question -- IMO definitly not (not referring to you or your post which adds to the discussion)

what i have done is put a spacer at just the rear supports of the seat (,maybe three eights of an inch).this has made all the difference in ride height. purchase 1\2 longer bolts.

 

So if your vehicle had electric seats that allowed for ride height they should be classified as dangerous?
