Dang there is alot of HATE for Harley Davidson bikes on here, I personally would never buy any other street bike than a Harley Davidson, no other bike will have that american heritage and american sound of a Harley. :D

I completely understand the idea of not getting too big a bike for your first. I guess my opinion is that a statement like that is more relevant on a street bike, where a flick of the wrist can having you doing 100 mph quicker than any human should. I'm trying to fight off temptation to get a Harley myself, so I understand where you're coming from. I can't offer any real advice since I don't own a bike, but get what you want, as long as you're safe and comfortable when riding it!

After 12 years of riding, if I had a buck for every HD I've seen parked on the shoulder or getting on a flatbed, I'd have a couple thousand dollars right now. I'm sure there's plenty of reliable ones out there but are you willing to spend $30k to find one?

Blow me... if I had a dollar for every Jap bike that sits in the garage that I know about I could quit my job. We all bought our bikes because we want to ride. I don't really care what you ride - as long as you understand I don't give a shit what you think about my ride. At the end of the day - chrome won't get you home, but it might get you laid.

Obviously you do care what people think or you wouldn't be all defensive... Everyones got their opinions on what bikes are better than others and you can find enough examples to make your case either way. You did hit it right on in the middle though. Who cares what you ride, as long as you're on 2 wheels, life is good!

Oh, and although chrome looks nice on the Harleys, it won't get you laid...

This can go on and on like to wave or not to wave!

Make sure you take a very good riders course. This will (if you pass) should lower your insurance rate. But mostly get you familiar with the bike itself and your ability to ride.

My first bike i bought was the bike i have still. Was not looking for a starter bike. That will get old quick.......flstni

    Good luck and be safe....

I'm just wore out by people trying to say that one is better than the other. It is amazing how many people still have the 1970s opinion of Harleys that they shake, rattle and roll apart going down the road. I ride my bike year round and know many people that do the same. I also know a couple guys that ride their Jap bike year round. I have respect for anyone who rides what they ride because it is what they want to ride. I'm just wore out on these guys that have to one up each other to justify why they bought what they bought. It is just getting old.

I hear ya. I put my two cents in at the beginning of the thread because the OP asked for opinions. Anything beyond that isn't necessary, it's all motorcycling!

Tex, tell me you've never poked fun at a rice bike? Or maybe called a buddy's Vision a Jetson bike?
For the most part, it's all in fun... although I did have some drunk Harley whore making some pretty intense derogatory remarks at my Kingpin. I thought my wife was gonna deck her, since I wouldn't. Her old man was apologizing profusely, trying to keep me cool.

We need to get a thread going of showing off your old bike - all the stuff that wet dreams are made of, you know?

Like this rough-around-the-edges 1982 XLS Roadster. My Dad bought her in 1996. She was my first ride (when I borrowed the keys when Dad wasn't home) and now she is in my garage. When I get the money together I'm going to rebuild her to her former glory.

Sorry about the thread jack... :D But this is just one of the reasons I ride a Harley.

I'd still recommend a used Honda with an 1100cc mill. Light, easy to learn on, and plenty of power to haul the lady. Put a crash bar on it and it will make it easier for you to right it up when you do drop it. Once you get a year or two under your belt and you're still bit hard by the 2-wheeled bug, then go shopping for a new ride. Then you can compare the Harleys to the Stars, etc.

Have fun with it and don't try to ride to impress - ride to enjoy. There really isn't anything close that compares.

BTW - did you take a MC course?

With that kind of logic, you should own a Ford without a muffler.

Vic makes a nice ride these days. We were all taking bets when they first started putting out crap in the early days that they'd never make it. Glad we were wrong, they've done some cool looking stuff with a great mill since.

The ones on the flatbeds are owned by posers not willing to scuff up the rubber.

Not a Harley guy and never will. Get whatever makes you happy. As someone said we all ride who cares what you ride and long as you ride safe.

Buying a Harley will make you a good Mechanic.:p
    Had to throw that in.
