Yeah, if you notice how short my CB antenna is, that is the reason. My SWR was probably not all that good, but I really only have there as a "place holder"... better than no antenna at all. Plus I made sure not to use it anyways.

I typically run a CB 4ft Hot Rod Whip.

Some spots in the mine were really "low ceiling". :crapstorm:

Hey guys, just what I need, another hobby. I rented a metal detector from a rental yard this week and went to look for stuff in the desert. Found a bunch of nails and unidentifiable fragments of rusty sheet metal, but nothing of interest. I was mostly wandering canyons that had recently flooded, as well as some old settlements, but in easily accessible areas far from gold country.

When I got bored I drove somewhere else and switched from looking for bits of metal to dispensing them.

    Screenshot_20200321-181643_Video Player.jpg

Even with the metal detector, I still lost a piece of brass :/

Oh, and agreed, the reward mine is a trip! Just went there last month. It's crazy turning off the engine and all the lights in there. Deafening silence... and your eyes start seeing things right away. I've never experienced such a total lack of sensory input. I'd go batshit crazy within an hour of being trapped in a mine.

Welcome! Where in Southern California are you at? There’s some pretty cool places to go prospecting around here, and you can also bring your little lead throwers for fun too... We’re pretty lucky here being within a couple hours drive to great BLM and forest service lands!

Thanks! I'm in the San Gabriel Valley mostly. But I'd rather be out in the desert.

Without prying for secrets, what are some okay regions for leisure prospecting in SoCal? (Just somewhere fun for a beginner.) My go-to playground is Old Dale, but I'd imagine a metal detector is pretty useless out there... the ground is practically paved with bullets, brass, and rusty cans! Oh, and burned out cars.

I was hoping to try panning in some canyons after the big rains last week, but even on the morning after a big rainfall, all the canyons were bone dry. Still had tons of fun playing with the metal detector though.

Here's my hoakey video from last month's trip to the reward mine and CG. Can't wait to come back--next time I want to find the remains of the salt tram, at the summit, then down in saline valley.

    Yep, but it seems longer.

I can be on BLM or Forest Service land in about 2 minutes.

Oh it’s not that bad. I meant a couple hours drive to good gold bearing areas, I live a few miles away from BLM and National Forest too, but no oro there. It makes a great place to fly my drone though!

i’ll get back to you on this question shortly with a little bit of research, but places like San Gabriel river have been known for gold, but the forest might’ve put that off-limits now. Let me check back on that for you, OK?

I'm actually jealous of your surroundings.

Oh hell no. I'm not moving to Cali (no offense). I love Prescott. I've been in AZ most of my life, but we'll be back in Vegas at some point.

Vegas? Sorry... Prescott is nice, too bad he can’t stay. Curious, are there good prospecting areas nearby?

I take care of my dad here in Prescott. The wife and I still have our house in Vegas. I can't get out and explore much and not for long periods of time.
There is gold in the area, but I think it's mostly in the Prescott Valley area (East of Prescott) and that is mostly private land. I think most of the gold is very fine.
Relics from "old west times" are what I'm most interested in, but I've only found modern-day junk so far.
I'm limited to 2-3 hour excursions here and there.

You have one of the best machines for working through junk to see/find coins and stuff. Granted, it takes time to learn the machine, but that is true of most MineLabs. Steep learning curve.

I went chasing gold yesterday and didn't dig a single target. That's a first! Hopefully gonna go chase some coins in a little while before this weather comes in.
