Not advocating it, but clamping force is ridiculous when u actually do the math.

The math is unreliable in the real world. Too many variables, a single grain of microscopic sand can throw it off

That's ridiculous well looks like it's time to worry about wheel studs on a brand new truck and have plenty of extras

I don't buy it. But I'm not smart enough to know one way or the other

I carry 3 extras with lug nuts in my tool box, they aren't too terribly expensive. Modern studs are not made like they used to be. They break if you go too far over their torque limit. You used to be be able to uga duga the crap out of studs and never worry about damaging them, not so much today

It's easy to explain when you work in the wheel or tire industry, but if you don't it's a little harder to grasp.

Just don't pay a shop to do it, theyll charge you 200 bucks for a job you can do for under $10

I feel like there's enough Saftey margin to run with 2 less wheel studs and be okay for a reasonable amount of time. But again, that's just me being an idiot with nothing to back it up haha.

Yeah..I had a wheel off yesterday and found the torque spec to be light. On my previous truck it was 150 ft lbs.

You totally could, if every thing is completely and totally free of ANY kind of debris (think brand new in a dust free environment) with proper lubrication where specified. Most manufacturers torque specs specify oilless on the studs, and oil between the lug nut and the washer on the lug nut.

Was there any grease or oil on the studs?

We routinely torque (hydraulicly stretch) high strength studs for tower cranes, upwards of 200bar.

I've pushed this thing with only 5 lugs and been fine for 6 months so far. I'm not worried. But I still plan on changing it out before my new wheels come next week

You're right, it's not normal. 10 years as a tire tech and I never broken this many studs. But it happened, and the only conclusion I can come to is that the dealer over torqued the studs 10 times (50k miles) before I started doing my own service and weakened them

Man, it's like a 20 minute job in your driveway. You might pay more in gas to and from the dealer to have them fix it

No I know and I feel comfortable doing it from looking at the parts. But I did buy the extended warranty might as well throw it on them. Even though it was mostly bought for fear of a electrical issues early on.
