Fuel Millage Problem

okay ive been doing some research and by the sounds of things im wayyyyy to low on the mpg thing.

heres my truck

2000 4 cyl 5 speed 4x4 from california with those emission things ( i live in nova scotia)

regular cab short box

4.30 gears stock

has 3 inch suspension lift, 33" x12.5 tires.
no deckplate mod or anything.

brand new iridium plugs,
i run supreme gas through it

ive tried seafoam engine cleaner which usually works for me.
ive tried fuel injector cleaner
ive tried octane booster

i always run 5w30 mobil 1 full sythetic oil every 3000 miles
fresh rear end fluids
brand new air filter
two new 02 sensors

has a magnaflow muffler

im getting about 225 miles to a full tank of supreme fuel all highway at about 70mph and it seems to work very good to. not struggling at all.

please let me know its killing me. just seems like its burning A LOT of fuel for a 4 banger. my turbo 6 cyl skyline gets wayyyy better mileage and is a lot more fun lol but not so much in the snow and want to get this figured out before snowfall if i can.

i have a new fuel filter im going to put on tomorrow to see if that helps

I would suggest regearing your truck, I'm pretty sure the 4cylinders come with 30" tires stock? your up 3 sizes so this might be why its eating all your gas up.

X2! Plus you're on a 3 inch lift.....that will kill MPG's too.

The best thing I can personally suggest is try to watch your driving habits as much as possible if not already. Slow acceleration, stop heavy braking, more coasting in, less speeding, etc, etc.
You also said you change your mobil 1 every 3000 miles, you can go a lot longer on the interval. Most guys usually change it at 5000 miles, that should help save you some money too. Just make sure you use a good quality filter, Mobil 1 filters are good.

Yeah more tire and weight equals less miles to a tank. I would down size on the tires if you can't do gears and on the budget. I'm going to also say its hard on your tranny as well.

i thought this aswell but i had 31" tires on the truck all last year and it wasnt any better on fuel. the gearing is the 4:30 gears and i mean i drive an hour each way to school everyday and it was getting the same fuel mileage last yea as this year. like i said i dont have to downshift or work the truck that hard to get it to go up hills and stuff it pulls hard but just seems to chew threw the gas really bad. the truck also has 135000 miles on it. it doesnt smoke or burn any oil or anything what so ever so i know the motor is a strong motor.

are there any mods or anything else i should try to do before getting into anything like regearing and things like that? i dont really wanna regear because it reves high enough now on the highway even with the 33"s i wouldnt want anything higher and anything lower i would definatly need to downshift for the bad hills and such.

 

You don't tell us what your MPG is.

 

i dont know how to get it haha. i live in nova scotia and everything is in litres and my truck is in miles. how many gallons do these trucks hold? it cost me about 62 bucks with supreme fuel and i get about 225 miles

 

so i think i might have one solution to help the problem. i have a few exhaust leaks and i got a check engine code. the code is basically saying its not running as efficient as it should be. i replaced both o2 sensors already but i think my cat might have some stuff in it and be clogged up. i looked the code up and thats what people are saying to change is the cat. im going to pull the exhaust down today and fix the leaks and see if i can do anything with the cat along with that fuel filter and letcha know

 

OK, 1 liter = 1.06 quarts. So either divide your liters by 3.7854, or multiply your liters by .264172 (either way!)
For example, if you used 25 liters (25 x .264172) = 6.6 gallons.

That is low. I just made a trip to cape breton and back in my '04 2.7 auto and got about 19.5 mpg. (320 miles to a the tank, 62ish litres to fill) I was cruising at about 110km/h the whole time and I'm lifted 2.5" with 285/75/16s
And dont bother with supreme, it isnt going to make any difference. Toyota recommends regular 87 in the taco.

 

you should have 225/75/15s on it stock. and you can get 18 gallons in the tank

 

oh and i agree with snoman. those motors are built with low compression so you should run 87 octaine in it for gas.

 

Also, "I'm getting so and so miles to a tank," is not really clear. I doubt you are running the tank to empty. Write down your odo and the amount of fuel you put in. Also realize that your speedo is probably off due to the tire size difference so that plays a role as well.

And finally my advice for all fuel mileage threads-"Just enjoy the drive." It is amazing the amount of people that are worried about fuel mileage and yet they still purchased a Tacoma and not a Prius.

 

That size tire sounds more like it's for a 2.4L tacoma...not the 2.7L.

 

did some math and made sure all the tires are up to par at 34 psi. still getting 13 mpg. again not driving it hard or wheeling. thats all highway driving and keeping it around 70mph. not revving it past 3200 when shifting at the most and it is staying around 2800 on the highway at 70mph ish. it pulls good and gets horible gas mileage. ill try switching back to regular and put some different plugs in it. see if that helps.

also here is some new additions to it:

pace setter header and no more exhuast leaks.

sounds way better and has more power but still didnt even make a lick of difference on the mpg at all.

 

do you have the 2.7? look inside the drivers side door, theirs a sticker that says 225/75/15.

i have the 2.7 in my truck but im not going back to a dinky tire like that and i know you guys are gonna say quit complaining about it if i wont but i just know its possible to get better mileage then this with my 33s regardless. still running stock gearing btw with 4:30 gears

Yea, I have the 2.7, and yes, you are right. The sticker does say 225/75/15.

I checked the numbers several times, and it comes out to a 28.29 inch tire. If the trucks come with 31's from the factory, why would the sticker say something different?
