DIY - Build and install a Bussmann RTMR Fuse/Relay Block

Can anyone point me to a very basic diagram on wiring a Bussmann fuse box to the vehicle itself? I have the ML-acr dual battery controller, this Bussmann fuse box I bought off of EBay and going to be wiring to various components. Light bars, Fridge, winch, compressor etc etc. I have little knowledge in the electronicals.

mine came with four sets of wires. Larger wires and smaller wires.(same color) Pretty basic there, one color goes to component and other goes to switch in cab. Larger red wire is for power but not sure if it goes directly to battery or to Blue Sea ML-acr as it shows in one of the Blue seas diagram?

any help would greatly be appreciated.

 

It's in the op. The Bussman has either one or two internal buss bars that supply main power to the fuses and ground for the switched side of the relays. You'll need an 80A fuse or circuit breaker and at least awg 4 wire from the battery to the fuse/breaker and from there to the proper lug on the Bussman. The ground buss has a lug you connect to B- on the battery. The winch and compressor draw too much for the Bussman and should have dedicated Battery connections. There's an identifying code for which Bussman you have.

I went ahead and got a second one to use for bed stuff. I had purchased some Song Chuan 5-pin relays and will be using two of them back to back(one right side up and one upside down) to raise/lower the cap with a set of 4-24” linear actuators. I’m pretty sure I can install them in the bed walls so that all but the top few inches are hidden. I like the firgellis because they can run faster(.6ips vs .3 or .4ips) using only 4A each. Not cheap though.

I gotta say, that was one stellar write up! I’m sure it’s been said between your post and here, but I skipped ahead just so I could post kudos to you for all the hard effort.

I’m just starting my lighting additions and this summarizes very well what I planned on doing and will be incredibly helpful (with spending my moolah too!).

Good timing. Ordered the second Bussman on Amazon and now Del City is having a 15% off sale this week on all the terminals, seals, connectors, wire, buss bars, fuses, relays, basically everything you could possibly need to put a kit together. The Amazon deal was still better on the Bussman itself but even without that it’s not hard to hit the $100 minimum total (after discount)

I found them last night. Pretty inexpensive with all the connectors used by the op and most of those discussed after in the thread. I like that they organize the kits so that you pick the connector options and it automatically counts the pieces needed including seals and terminals or you can buy just one of anything. Over $25 and shipping is free plus they have the higher current multi- terminal connectors I’ve recently found necessary. Namely, the Metri Pack 630(46A) and Metri-Pack 480(48A). Also a better selection of sealed relay connectors.

Maybe the third one. It has the open barrel crimp die needed for the metri pack terminals and possibly the full round crimp for the cable seals. This one will do the seals and wire crimps up to awg14.

In cases where there’s a tpa the cable seal doesn’t have to be crimped to the wire and the seal can slide over the crimp but the Bussman doesn’t have a tpa for each wire so the seal crimp is what keeps the seal in place.

Pay attention to the shape of the crimp slots, while many crimp tools will make the crimp hold, the wrong shape may not fit into your connector. Also, if you’re making different crimps having to switch dies may not be as convenient as having two less expensive tools.

 

Appreciate it. I had come to a similar conclusion regarding having multiple tools vs multiple dies. Now if Amazon wasn’t 30 days out on some of this stuff, I could move faster.

I ended up deciding to go with the two linked in the original post... but need to find another supplier as who I had chosen is pretty far out on delivery.

Definitely. I have the most fun on mod day’s where everyone is there to lend a hand or a brew. Somebody in TTC ought to be able to help.

 

Still a bit of prepping to do. And now I'm reading the manufacturer's specs on the light bar are 16A and Deutsch DT. But that Deutsch series is only rated at 13A. I have an email out to the manufacturer to see what they say.
