What? You can get gears and master install kits front and rear for less than $1000.

well ok, maybe not the parts alone, but then the labour. He's paying a mechanic to rebuild the front and rear diffs. and that ain't free. And at the end of the day he's still got this:

    Labor gets expensive fast.

Reasonable to have the differentials set up but paying to remove and replace both differentials

I don't know why in the hell you would want to gear up higher in the front when you spend about 95% of your drive time running the rear only. If it was me I would do the rear alone and call it a day.

Ahh.. I got it.. so you are a manual transmission owner. The essential oil members of TW.

If you'd had ever driven one of these 4cyl trucks you would understand that it does make a difference. Being able to squeeze a few extra WHP out of a 140hp engine and also keep it in more desirable RPM ranges goes a ways for the drivability

It's because manual transmissions drive at a 1:1 ratio where as an automatic does not. I get it and I agree, the autos on the 4 bangers are about as worthless blinker fluid. Manual trannys on the 4 bangers are where it's at, but for those who have the mispriviledge of owning an auto they can always just regear and get some giddy up back.

I just wanted to poke fun at the dude because of a previous thread in the 3rd gen section where they were asking if manual tranny owners were equal to the essential oils of TW. Hahaha.

No, it's because there is much less power loss due to a purely mechanical transfer of power and each gear of a 5 speed gearbox drives at a different, and optimized, ratio for the given engine it's mated to. 1:1 is only 1 of the ratios and usually 5th gear, but sometimes it's 4th gear with 5th gear being overdriven for highway mileage.

3rd Gen huh? Isn't that the forum for Prius owners?

Since it seems I need to pump the brakes, maybe start smaller, what performance could air intake/exhaust should I get?

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
There are none that make a significant difference other than noise.

And when you work out the $/HP ratio, it's really pricey.

If you must have more power, and are stuck with paying labor to make it happen, it could well be that trading trucks is the most cost effective solution
