I've noticed the same with my Elite.

Grinding mode vs welding mode is not very percice.

As I wear prescriptive lense glasses, I never thought of this as a big issue. I take the Elite off to grind and put it on to weld.

Cab mount relocation...slowly making it's way up my shitty list. Lol. I patched the big holes hiding behind the stock mounts.

Just Curious why you did not wait till the legs were on the table and it was at working height ??

No way my knees could take working that low .

You might need to remove the mill scale where your work clamp goes to get the best connection

That is so much easier to do on a 2nd gen than a third. I did one recently and with a combination of that damned driver's side wire harness that was added to 3rds and the mount being twice as wide, it was a PITA. I spent more time grinding things down than just being able to cut them off. How many hours did you have into the relocation?

I hate 3rd gen cab mounts too. The 2nd is so much easier to work on.

the 3rd gen has that stupid piece of square tubing in it that runs perpendicular to the face of the cab mount that you’re cutting off haha. It’s very annoying!

Yep! I use a 6” disc to get through that. If I’m just doing a normal cmc it’s not so bad, but when someone with a 3rd gen asks for a more aggressive chop, ugh. 2nd gens I just lop the end off and turn it into a little box. 3rd, not so much.

I have about 5 hours to complete one side. Again, I'm not a speed demon and that is totally cleaning the old mounts smooth and patching the hole in the frame, painting, etc.. I'm also using an angle grinder. Since the owner left his truck, I am kinda taking my time and making it as nice as I can.

I love when I have that opportunity. Not having someone sitting there watching you work, and just relaxing and chugging along at your own pace.

Man, I just tried using a carbide sawzall blade and it cut the mount off in less than 5 min. Granted, now comes the loads of grinding, but I wish I had tried that yesterday.

I did that for a 5th gen 4Runner the other week. It’s too tight to get an angle grinder in there and it worked absolute wonders. I plan on using my oxy torch whenever I have to relocate my cab mount.

Now that is Funny over the Years I trained so many welders I sometimes forget I am alone.

Look around and wonder where did everyone go.

That would have been smart! I never claimed to be very smart....

But actually, i was feeling pressure to get the holes drilled so i could return the drill. All my material showed up at once.

Good point on the clamp... I often just clamp to work pieces.

Just finished cutting all the base/leg pieces to shape... just joint prep left to do. Whew.

So I think I've decided to buy a welder instead of paying somebody labor to weld some random things on my truck. Haven't welded in years though so I don't really know where to start. Only welded in Ag back in high school. I'm thinking the Hobart 140 and go from there. I assume this welder will be enough to weld things like reinforcement parts and cab mount relocates, but please tell me if I'm wrong on this.

Yep, that’s a good starter machine. Same reason I got into welding as well, I didn’t want to pay anyone to do it.
