Already spent thousands. Last decision is my sub....

So far here is what I have purchased for my stereo. Only the head unit and associated gear is installed running factory speakers. The rest is in boxes.

Kenwood DNX 9960 head unit
Kenwood CMOS back up camera
Kenwood ipod cable
SWI Jack steering wheel control

Focal K2 165 KR components (front)
Focal Polyglass 165 CVX coax (rear)

JL HD 900/5 amp 100x4 and 500x1

I need to pick a pair of subs for my 2010 double cab. My focus is sound quality. I also do not want pressed paper to be any part of the cone material as these will see humidity and water exposure.

I am good and broke so money is somewhat of an issue, but I have already spent over $3000 in equipment (woud have been $5000 retail) so I am looking to spend in the area of $500 on a sub or pair of subs. Sound quality is my first criteria. What should I do for a sub? Suggestions welcome.

I have eliminated shallow subs of all kinds to to lack of low end. I am thinking a pair of IDQ V3 10" subs in a sealed box at this point. Dont know what else I should look at. Will spend $300-700 or so and all of it on one woofer if I need to get the quality I want. I want the sub(s) to fit with my amp and crossovers all behind the rear seat. Id like ot be able to tilt the seat back down to show of what I have to someone who wants to see it. Thats about all I can think of... what would you buy if you were me?

 

Kicker comp. Great investment in subs IMO

Excellent Choice (if you want to stay in your price range). This is what I am running and damn they are great. Great bass sound and I know my amps are barely breaking them in. I've had them for 2 yrs, no problems.

 

If somethig is out of my price range I may be able to get a really good deal from my dealer. For example, I got my Focal speakers (both sets) for under $600 and the amp for under $700. They will sell me any subs I want at basically $25 over cost. I know they are dealers for JL, Kenwood, Kicker, Focal, Sony, Rockford Fosgate, etc. but not any very boutique brands like Seas, Morel, Xtant, etc.

 

10" Kicker L7.. just one will rattle your brain (if you want it too) i had one in my old 08 scion tC in a ported kicker box and it blew my back windshield to pieces goin down the highway.
besides the extreme poundage.. it has great high to lows...
all together, a wide range of performance with one single L7.
you will be impressed!

 

cant go wrong with KICKER! IMO!

A 10w7 or 10w6 is too deep to fit. I considered a 10w3 but the idq is better sq but twice the cost. Kicker is all spl and not sq at all.

 

www.stereointegrity.com look at the BM mkIII's , the pre-orders are all shipped out and openned today for orders, these will not last long, I pre-ordered mine months ago should get it any day now.

 

From my experience I love the Kicker L7s but they might be too deep to fit. Alpine Type R subs are great subs for a nice price. JL W6 is amazing but I dont think it would fit either so you would have to go with the JL W3 and its a big downgrade from the W6. So after all my jabbering i'd say Type R or W3s.

I know you said no shallow mounts, but have you thought about the JL 13TW5?

Marv has raved to me about this sub calling it the most dynamic sub he's ever heard in a pick up truck...

what do you mean? I thought I had read that you intalled some and were quite impressed with them?

awsome. had the box made for my acc cab .It rocks. I have the AVIC110. Infinty ref amps and Kappa door speakers.
Big bucks. Fantastic rides home from work.

Correct. I've personally had a hand in blowing two of them up on a system I know was setup right because I did it. Another member on here has had an "experience" as well.

Good news is that I'm making my Halloween costume out of a BM voice coil from the sub I "overpowered". Yep, I recycle.

 

The IDQ's are great choices for sound quality in small boxes. Another choice would be the peerless XXLS 10's. They play very deep and are pretty musical in very small boxes (about 0.55cu.ft ish). Heard these in an audi and was very impressed! I myself have a dayton HO10 in a small ported box in my double cab. It won't win any SPL competitions, but plays very deep and clean.

 

I hope its in the process of being resolved. If everything goes to plan Im still gonna rock it just for the simple fact it about the only sub you can comfortably fit in my truck.

 

I was thinking both of those would work too but wasn't sure about depth. I've installed a Dayton HO10 and I agree it's quite nice. I personally own a pair of XXLS12's in the house and they're great.

Did you ever find out how much to get it reconed? How much is he charging and is he paying shipping back?

 

Can you share your experience on how much power blew it? A FiQ is too deep. It also has a pressed paper cone woofer if I remember correctly. I know thats the best material accoustically, but the sub will eventually get wet as it will be the lowest audio component in the truck.
