First Oil Change

I see nothing wrong with a change at 500, this is a throw back from the days when new cars did not have the close tolerance machining that is used in modern day manufacturing plants.
Ferrari's, Porsches and Corvette's don't do this, so if it wasn't done , there is no problem.
I waited until the original oil got a bit dirty(3K) and then changed it out for Mobil 1 syn. I change the oil twice a year religiously, spring and fall (like I just got done this am) all this is based on my mileage per year which is about 11-12 thousand.
I don't have a garage to keep my nice truck in, so I do the oil when the weather is favorable. Since its Oct in New England ,you can have a whole lot of rain and cool weather, so I did it this am.
I actually had only 4k on this last change. Its fun doing your own change as you know its correct.
As far as other maint, I did have the 30K done completely, all fluids, front to back, removed and replaced.

Getting back to your 500 mile change, again I don't see any problem with it and it can only be good for the truck.
As we all know frequent changes of oil and filter is the best solution.

 

Under normal driving conditions there is nothing wrong with changing your oil before 5000 miles except, you're throwing good oil away. One of the benefits of a modern truck is the extended maintenance intervals.

 

I went 5000... then 5000.. then 7000...

My truck purrs. Changing before they suggest is dumb. Why would Toyota tell you 5,000 over the norm 3,500? Wouldn't that cost them money (their maint sales) as well as warranty work?

In my field, I have interacted with a lot of people who have gone through mechanical engineering, and some who are in automotive and aerospace and other areas where knowledge of lubrication, friction, and wear is important.

Most of them will change the oil on a new or rebuilt engine within about 500 or 1000 miles of driving, because the wear rate on the engine is greatest in the first few hundred and last few hundred miles of its life. The blowby rate (and oil contamination) is also greatest in the first 50-100 miles as the rings take their final wear-in. Fresh oil and a filter at a few hundred miles are cheap insurance.

Vehicle manufacturers want their engines to last through warranty period and through average ownership period. So, 3 to 7 years or so. If you want your engine to last and perform well beyond that period, it is not a bad idea to think about the things that might help in the 7+ year range.

 

Just replaced my 1997 Tacoma with a 2011 because Toyota gave me a ridiculous amount of money for my 97 cause of the frame rust issue. It had 236,576 miles on it when I bought it it had 43,000 or so miles on it. It had a 2.7 liter engine. I used Valvoline oil, castrol oil, and NAPA brand oil (remember when it was .99 cents a quart) but for the last 2 years I had it I used Shaffers synthetic oil and I always used fram filters, I never had any issues with the engine or oil leaks. I was always anal about changing the oil at 3000 miles. just my 2 cents

I change first oil at 1000 miles just for the feel good aspect. I don't think it is needed but it can't hurt anything, and just in case there is some shavings or whatever contaminants in the oil, then I see it as cheap insurance.
Every 5000 miles or 6 months from there. I use regular dino oil. My truck is 10 years old and does not burn a drop of oil (I know technically that's not a correct statement, but you know what I mean), there are no leaks and no smoke.
I don't have anything against synthetic though, just don't see the need for the extra expense if dino does the job for me.

Ive always changed my oil at 1k and then 3k for all new cars Ive owned. You should see how much metal flake is present in the oil at 1k miles.

Wow! this an old thread...I changed mine @ 3000kms at the dealership cause i get 8 free under my platinum warranty then ill switch over to mobil1 synthetic...I request to see the oil to check for metal flakes/partials but they just dump it into a big bin...

 

First at 1K, no reason other than that's the way I like it. It's a feel good thing, maybe I flushed out something left from the manufacturing process.

 

I have about 1000 miles, Gonna change it this week and I'm going Synthetic. Mobil one.

I'm going to do the first oil change as soon as I get home tonight. I'll be at about 2,000 miles. It will be nice and hot from my commute. Not really sure why I'm changing it early. Just seems like the right thing to do. Then I'll be doing the recommended 5,000 mile changes after that.

 

I did mine at 1.5k on the truck and now every 6mo or 5k.(synthetic)

I also stick to the old school 6mo or 3k on my daily driver (non synthetic)

 

I am going to let the dealer change it every 5,000 (and rotate the tires) up to the covered 25,000 miles of service and then I will do it myself using Mobil1 full synthetic and a Purolator filter just like I do on all my other cars.

 

I just did my first @ 3,000 with Mobil 1. The oil was very dirty for only 3k... I need to do the diff oil next weekend...

 

I just picked up my ne taco and the dealer told me it has synthetic oil in it already and first oil change does not have to be for 10k miles. I am going to make them change it at 5k.
