That’s also why digging for something near a high bank is dangerous too- Learned that lesson with a few close calls in my younger days too. I was invincible back then until the truth :smack:‘d me.
We had a sand lens in a beach bluff that I could screen for old fossil shark teeth, and it fell right after I was walking away from it one day, covering the teeth deposit with over 200 yards of material. I was actually mad at first the deposit was gone, then realized I could have been a deposit too and nobody would have known I was there. Teenagers disappear a lot and that would have been the end of my story.

It’s also funny how many knuckleheads are on YouTube digging deep pockets for gold in high streambanks with big boulders sticking out over their heads!

In the early 70s I worked on construction of rural water lines in KS. I ran a backhoe and most of the digging was 3ft. Some of the deep, steep gullys tho.... I had to dig down about as far as the how would reach, 16ft iirc. PVC pipe only bends so much. No OSHA, no shoring. It made me nervous for the guys in the trench. I always told them if you hear me holler just run!

Fortunately nothing ever happened. The cave in vids I've watched still give me the shakes.

I am stoked! I found what I believe is a South Carolina Civil War uniform button! Waiting on conformation, but that's what it looks like, to me. If it pans out, this is my first really significant find.

Yeah, something foreign. Don't know why or what it says, but all the SC buttons have that.

Don’t want to sound critical, but I’d take it easy with that stuff! You might want to look up or talk with an expert for restoration techniques – that’s a really nice find and you don’t want to mess it up. Its definitely a special one!

@MKW Hartung's Road makes a good point. It's usually best to delay cleaning a find until you have a positive ID. It typically does not matter, but you may just have something very unique there.
Regardless, you scored a really neat find!
