Thinking of stepping up to a Tundra. Input please from those that have done it...

I have a '19 Tacoma TRD Off Road in Quicksand with the long bed. Awesome truck in many ways and in some ways, which have been beat like a dead horse on this forum, it is not. My beef is I just can NOT get used to the lack of rear seat space. Let's face it, unless you are kidless or have toddlers, it ain't gonna work for any normal size people to ride back there on a regular basis. I have found an '18 Tundra SR5 CrewMax 4x4 with 19k miles. It's at a local Toyota dealer and certified, so extra powertrain warranty. Dealer is really trying hard to trade me. I would like to hear from folks here that have made the jump from the Tacoma to the Tundra. Happy with your decision? I sat in a CrewMax today and it is like my '18 F150 in that the back seat room is cavernous! Tundra owner??? Give me the skinny please....!

Ive got one. The crewmax tundra is awesome, there is a huge amount of space. It’s super nice for road trips or if you have multiple people riding with you.

Be sure to get one with the 38 gallon tank. You’ll likely average 13-17 MPG. I’m currently a little over 14 mpg, but i have a camper on the back of mine.

@Willy224 has a tundra crewmax as well.

14 with a V8 and camper is awsome. I tow one snowmobile in a clamshell trailer 12ft long total weight of sled and trailer 1500lbs and I get about 10.5 mpg in the taco.Its only on snowy weekends. How do you like the ride of the Tundy vs taco? With a kid getting bigger by the day it seems my back seat is getting more cramped for the kiddo.

 

Been both directions. Went from a tacoma to a Tundra because we bought a bigger boat. It was nice. Had a 2015 limited. But, ultimately we are going back to a smaller boat and I bought another tacoma. It's so much easier to drive , park and put gas in. I remember why I love to tacoma. The perfect size truck other then the back seat. The wife has a mini van for that.

I traded my 2017 Tacoma for a 2019 Tundra crewmax. I don’t have kids, but we tow a side by side a fair amount, though the Tundra is overkill for that. I just wanted to try something different.

The good: The crewmax has an obscene amount of room in the back. The seats are soft and comfortable and the truck rides great. It tows our side by side effortlessly. The 5.7 V8 and 6 speed auto are both really smooth and it sounds great. It’s just a solid truck.

The bad: It’s also a huge truck. Parking can be a nightmare depending on where you’re at. It’s not just the length, but the width also comes into play, especially in a narrow drive thru. Gas mileage isn’t great. I’m averaging about 14 mpg, about 50/50 city and highway. Towing our side by side (1500 lbs and 1000 lb trailer) it gets around 10.5 mpg at 55-60 mph.

The truck is big and comfortable, but also a bit of a chore for daily driving and the fuel economy isn’t the best. I like the truck, but I’m contemplating another Tacoma. If you have kids or need to tow on a regular basis, the Tundra might be a good choice. It has plenty of room and you should be able to get a ton of trouble free miles out of it. Just depends on what you need.

Settle down Francis! This is the 3rd Gen forum. I have a 3rd Gen. I see many folks on here that reply to posts that their info says they actually have a Tundra. I may sign up for 'tundraworld' if there is such a thing. RIght now I wanna hear from folks on this forum.

I switched about a year ago. Needed more towing capacity. Back seat is huge in crewmax. Just took mine on a 4900 mile trip. Got around 17.5 mpg overall. I got 19 in my Tacoma so not a lot of difference.

 

LOVE the look and aura of the Tacoma. I live in a small town and every stop light I was at, there was an F150 like mine staring back at me. Was an awesome truck. And I may end up with another. Just thinking I may try a Tundra this time...

 

I’ll speak my thoughts on this. I used to own a 2005 Tacoma and loved it. It was a very good truck and it never let me down. I then took a small detour with a 2007 duramax diesel which I sold and bought my 2015 tundra new. I have owned it for 5 years now and it’s a great truck and like the Tacoma it has also never let me down. The room is great for a family and it ties very well for a gas engine. The downside would obviously be the fuel economy I avg 14.5 mpg. And I have 34.5” tires (295)s. I do daily drive mine and have 80k miles on it. I live in the Phoenix Az area and at times the truck feels really big especially in parking lots and it does not fit in my garage. And honestly it’s not the best as a daily driver. Recently I have found myself eyeing the Tacoma’s again. So all in all it depends on what you intend to do with the truck. If your not towing or hauling a lot of gear or people often the Tacoma is a much better truck. But if you do haul or tow a lot the tundra is a great option. Good luck with your decision!

 

I have a 7 year old that fits fine in the back of mine. He is normal sized though, so... I've had people back there and while it's tight, it is what it is and I don't sit back there so I don't care. If we need more room, we take my wifes Rav4.

How many people are you toting around on a regular basis? Do you need a full size rig? Obligatory, "have you thought of a 4runnner?" comment.
