TRD Sport vs TRD Off Road

Not to be Captain Obvious, but i'm pretty sure the paint actually serves a purpose in that it protects the metal.

David , I'm not buying this ^^^ either . If you were approaching a steep hill , and your angle of approach was very acute , then maybe you would lose a couple inches of visibility , of the stuff you were approaching 2 inches ago .

If you or others don't like the idea or look of a non-functioning hood scoop that's fine , but I don't see how the scoop can be brought up in a discussion of the capabilities of the Sport vs Off Road .

 

I think the Sport makes more sense for 2wd trucks than the OR, giving the advantages of a TRD package for those who don't plan on doing major off-roading. I understand getting a 4x4 Sport, but getting a 2wd OR just seems wrong to me.

This is probably the funniest post I've read in a long time. I've been thinking this forever, but haven't had the gusto to say it. Rep for you, sir.

 

Not everyone needs 4x4 and the PreRunner gives you the ease of entry and more road height. The off-road package just gives you a better truck for the occasions you may need the better suspension and other options it contains. Plus it helps hold some value to the truck. The scoop on the sport looks cool but can be added at anytime.

 

I especially love the "woodsy" description. I know what you mean though. 4x4 dbl cab OR here.

 

You can protect the metal with alot of things, or you could paint them all white but since aesthetics are important you get your choice of a variety of carefully selected colors.

Now on to the fact that this "enthusiast website" is full of people doing stuff to their trucks that are without any function other than to change the aesthetics...oh, and spending a payload of money.

Point being, it is irrational to discount a thing merely because it may only be "for looks".

 

Ask HB Murphy what is opinion of the hood scoop is if you think I am the only off roader here who knows that more visibility is better than less! Paul (HB) said if there was a way, he would flip his hood over so he could improve the visibilty (even more) on his non-scooped hood!

Yes, that visibility issue is not a big one, but that is just one more capability of OR vs Sport.

Get a Sport if the way the truck LOOKS is important to you... Get an Off Road if the way the truck DRIVES is important to you! By 'drives' I mean 'go places'.

It is a TRUCK afterall... If you wanted a sports car, get a Subaru, Corvette, or Ferrari!

For those of you talking about hood scoops--what are your ideas for a flat hood scoop outlined with a black grill and placed either left or right of the hood towards the front seats....would that make it more functional and would it get in the way of anything? (I'm thinking of something like a Ford Raptor hood or the old ford diesel hoods)

 

Some people do not want to take a 30k+ truck and put redneck pin stripes on it! Get stuck, use the LOCKER to get out, only to find everything under the truck is fucked up and needs replacing! As far as the hood scoop is concerned, the visibility without it sucks also, so what's the difference?? If your a die hard wheeler, get the OR and do it up. If you want to use it as a DD, get the sport and enjoy. My 4x4 sport seems quite capable off the beaten path anywho. I'm just not gonna put her in a spot where I need a LOCKER to get her out. Thats the real difference between the Sport and OR. They are both very nice trucks and have their own pros and cons.

 

Great job at missing the point (or pretending to) of comparing these two entirely.

The paint is needed, obviously. The fact you can have your choice of colors of this component of PURPOSE would be after the fact.

The 'scoop', well, no.

As far as other things people use for asthetics only, that wasn't really the topic now was it. you're trying to hard and it is evident you are grasping for straws.

Everybody has thier own opinion of what looks good, Mine - chrome is for rednecks & old people - not saying that is right but its how I feel. I bought a sport because 1) I HATE CHROME 2) I don't do any crazy trails - paid to much for this truck to make it a trail rig. I am happy with my purchase & all the Sport hatin OR guys wont change that.

Some day when I am old & retired kids will be on TW talkin smack about how only old guys black out thier truck, to which I will respond " Ahh, young kids don't know shit" and the cycle will have repeated itself.

 

mabye as a heat extractor? like this?? only they're up front, i cant say for sure weather they do anything or not but i can see heat waves coming out of them after i park it

 

I'm not hatin' on the Sport owners. I bought the most truck I could afford. Maximized the potential uses and capabilities.

I don't think anyone would dispute the fact that more visibility is better than less , while offroading or not , that's a no-brainer , and as you point out yourself , the hood scoop is " not a big issue " .

So get over it .

As far as your " get a Sport if looks are important , and an Offroad if you want to ' go places ' " comment . I think it has been well documented in this thread that many people , myself included bought the Sport because it fit our needs better than the Offroad .

In my own case I needed a longbox for my work as a carpenter , and this is not an option in the Offroad , because obviously a shortbox truck , with it's shorter wheelbase is better suited to offroading . The inclusion of a locker and A-Trac in the Offroad further enhances that model's ability to do the job it was configured to do , which is offroad .

That being said , I bought my Sport DCLB 4x4 because I needed a reliable work truck / daily driver that could get me to job sites on non-paved or maintained roads . I also got 4x4 because I am in Canada and deal with snow in the winter . I personally think the colour matched bumpers and handles , etc of the Sport do look better , so I certainly don't feel that I made the 2nd best decision in my choice of truck for my needs .

And yes , thank you for pointing out the obvious , but I know it is a truck and not a Ferrari , but I was not in the market for a sports car any more than I was in the market for a dedicated offroading machine .

 

Got the Sport for the long bed.
Pure and simple.
I use my truck off road more often than most, use it as my work truck,daily driver, and tow it behind my Class A motor home. For MY needs the Sport was the obvious choice.
How much more utility can one get from a truck?
Needless to say I love my choice and my truck.

 

I just bought a 2011 TRD sport with the towing package. Havnt even seen the truck being that I'm in Iraq. My question is the Specs on the dealers website says it has the locking rear diff, I thought only the TRD offroads came with that. Can someone please clarify?

First Tacoma so i can say which is better though.
