I pod Center Console MOD 1st Gen

I just did this mod last weekend i was tired of unplugging my Ipod and putting it away when i get out of my truck. Seeing how my Deck has full I pod control i would hide it.

I have the Pioneer DEH-P7100BT and It has 2 USB ports on the back of the Deck i will be doing a write up of the other USB port soon. That one is going to be a dash USB for other mp3 players and flash drives it will also charge cellphones. "but not my FUCKING Moto Droid" just not compatible.

Tools needed
1. Philips head screw driver
1. 10mm socket and wrench with a 10" extension bar
1. Dremel tool or some sort of cutting tool
1. Velcro
1. USB extension cord
1. 6 pack of your favorite beer (Optional)

Also i must note that this write up is for a 02 Extra cab 5 speed model so it might be a little different with an Auto i don't know i bought a real truck.
And i don't know if the DC's have the same console as well.

First thing you need to do is remove the panel in front of the shifter by pushing in the push clips and prying them out with your nail.


Next remove the 12v plugs


Now remove the 4 screws holding the shifter trim. 2 on each side.


Now there is 4 more bolts holding the console 1 on each side and 2 in the console take a 10mm socket and remove.


Now remove the console and remove the 7 screws on the storage compartment. 3 in the back 3 in the front and 1 right in the middle of the bottom. You will also have to remove the storage compartment on the back of the console to remove the back screws it just pops out


some of the photos might be confusing I decided to do this write up about half way into the mod. the White wire is the I pod cable of you don't already know. as you can see after i took out the console storage container i took a Dremel and notched and grove in the top just wide enough for the wire. i took the photo after i put it back in.

Now that you have the Ipod cable ran it's time the run your USB extender cable. Plug it into your Deck and run it down tucking it under the shifter trim.


Now I hid the USB and Ipod cables under the carpet for that clean look even that it's hidden under the console.



Before putting back all of the console check the make sure the Ipod is working properly. After everything is all buttoned back up take some Velcro and placing t on the Ipod make sure you prep the Ipod & console with rubbing alcohol.

Note i ended up putting 3 strips of Velcro on the Ipod because with the one strip shown in the photo it was Wobbly.


Finished product all & all i think it is the perfect location for the Ipod and it's mounted up on the side so that the storage compartment is still usable.

I am currently exploring my options for something similar. Not sure if I am going to use the PA15 option with my stock HU (adapts to the HU CD changer connection) or get a new HU with Ipod controls, either. Thanks for the ideas.

That's not the only one I'm working on a custom fiberglass sub enclosure formed out of the back passenger trim panel where the cup holders are.
Still don't know if I'm going to be doing a writeup on that one i might be manufacturing some to sell if it turns out the way I want it.

 

Looks great! I want to do this, but don't have upgraded audio components...Headunit is stock. Can I still do this?

 

I don't know if there is a Ipod adapter for the stock head unit's on 1st Gen's

 

If you have the CD player, there are several aftermarket adapters that plug into the CD changer port at the back of the head unit. I have been looking into this as an option. Check out the Crutchfield site, where you can enter your specific make and model for a match, or Google "Toyota Ipod adpater," or search the TW audio forum for Ipod adapter, too. I am not mentioning specific models because I haven't researched this for a while and it seems new stuff comes out all the time.

Before I bought an aftermarket headunit, I bought this adapter which plugs right into the aux port in the back of the stock radio. Worked great!
