Currently living in Valdosta, and running TRD OR with 285/75s, camper shell, drawers/gear, bumper, winch, skids. Looking to regear to 4.88s, but honestly cannot find anyone around town that will do the work or that seems reputable. Any suggestions on an off road shop/mechanic in south GA that could do the work?

    Thanks,
    Matt

I recommend buying from @ECGS and when your new gears arrive swap everything out or have a shop just swap it out for you. They have the best warranty and customer service. But if you plan on bigger tires I would look into the 5.29s. I am currently doing the brake in process for my 5.29s from them

Thanks for the info - I’ve considered 5.29, I didn’t really plan on bigger than ~33” tires. As far as doing it myself, I’m just not 100% confident I can get everything back in there correctly, and it’s my DD, don’t wanna ruin anything in there. I was planning on buying the gears and hopefully just dropping it to a more competent mechanic. Thanks again for the reply!

I live in Douglas, so not too far from you!
Honestly, there aren’t many shops around the area that specialize in off-roading, to my knowledge, and even less that actually know what they’re doing with Toyota’s. I’ve thought about regearing at some point as well, I’ve thought when the time came I would take a trip to north Georgia or somewhere semi close to take it somewhere that actually knew what was going on and do it correctly.

ECGS is your place. swapping out the rear third, and the front diff is not too big of a deal. If you can find someone local to help that has some experience, you can bang it out in a day. No guess work, just would be swapping assemblies. Or, make the journey to Raleigh and have them do it. They stand behind their work and get it right the first time. I blew a regeared diff a year or so after they put it in, they replaced it no questions asked. 5 year warranty I do believe. Great people.

I'm looking for a shop within an hour of Augusta that can put in the 5.29 R&P for me. I could do it, but I'd like to find a reputable shop that can do it instead.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!

    I ended up going to:

Off Road Mafia in Ball Ground, GA (Cherokee Co.)

They did a great job! Drew the owner is super cool, his whole crew is actually.

They are Jeep specialists, but they know their sh!t when it comes to re-gearing anything. They also know the owner of Nitro gear and know some particulars about the Nitro kits for the 3rd gens.

Overall great experience. I'll use them again if I need gear work.

$700 ish + the cost of an OEM Seal kit ($90 ish) they had to order after discovering the Nitro Gear kit didn't come with the right ones. They actually told me prior to coming with the Nitro kit that the last one they did prior to mine came with the wrong seals...

I was like..."Nah, mine is going to be good to go".

    Wrong

I know this thread is old. I just moved to GA, Lee County. I'm trying to locate a garage that can swap out my needle bearing for the ECGS bushing. No issues right now. I'm ordering 2.0 coilovers this month and would like to get the bearing swapped now.
I don't mind driving a few hours for a great shop.

I don’t know anyone down that way but I am in Holly springs, GA and do them all the time $20. I also do a lot of things for these trucks. If you ever find your way up I will definitely take care of you.

Sorry I'm a little confused on your reply. You only charge for $20 for the needle bearing is that correct?
