Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
Anyone ever hunt quail out in Dixie Valley, among all the cast-off armor? I took the oldest out there Saturday to show her all the APC's and Yorks. I knew there were lots of flowing wells, but I didn't know there were fishing ponds. More water than I suspected.

I heard a LOT of those little top-knot bastards around the old homesteads and I like to hunt them (in season, of course, which they aren't now).

The lack of doves surprised me, though.

Never hunted out there. As you may know a good dog is really helpful. Those quail can really stick hard and if you manage to knock them down they can be near impossible to fish out of the russian olive / willow / sage they like to hang in.

I find myself between dogs (which itself is enough reason to drink heavily) these days, but I understand their value. I did a quail hunt last season w/out my dog. Way more challenging, but I did manage to bring a few birds home.

When the season opens, maybe I'll give it a go. Really aren't any better ways to spend a Saturday morning (close call with fishing, though).

    Thanks! He's a handful but I haven't met a puppy that isn't. He's 10 weeks old as of yesterday.

No sporting breed is easy to handle. Especially the Germans. Wire or Shorthair? Ir's hard to tell since he's still a pup.

I had my tussle with a shorthair in my younger days. Best damn pointer I ever had. Biggest pain in the ass I ever had.

I miss that bastard to this day, and it's been > 25 years.

I tried hounds. Beagles are great for running rabbits and my last one was actually a decent flush dog for quail (always a task to keep him in range, though) and doves.

I'm sticking with labs, now. Anyone know any good local breeders? Googling is one thing, but looking for folks with personal experience with the breeder.

Nice. Those are a little mellower then German short or wired. My first dog I got when I was 15 was a German Shorthair. He was a handful until he was about 12. From 12-14 he finally mellowed out.

He had two flaws that I was never able to break him of. The first was he would not go in water over his calf. He would literally run miles to find a spot he could cross without getting wet. That one was pretty funny and seldom annoying.

The other flaw was he ate every 5th bird. I first hunted over him when he was 9 months old. Me and a buddy, who had a great lab, took him out for pheasant. We bagged 4 in short order. A few minutes later my dog locks up and we bag the fifth. My dog runs over to the kill and I think he's gonna bring it back. Nope. He grabs the bird and heads into the thickest gnarliest thicket he can find. He lays down and proceeds to eat the breast meat. My buddies dog goes over and tries to grab the bird and my dog almost ripped him up for it. Keep in mind these dogs had known each other since they where both 8 weeks old and they had never so much as barked at each other before. I yelled. I called him back. I did everything I could but he finished his meal and came up to get petted. He did that with every 5th bird I ever shot over him. That one was annoying but became pretty funny as the years went on.

Good luck with the pup. I hope he gets some birds in the freezer for you.

Wow. The bird eating is funny AND crazy.

I dont think water is going to be an issue with louie. He jumped in the tub with my daughter this morning and hung out

Thanks for the info and the well wishes!

My shorthair was super mellow from pup until he died at 7. If we were hunting real dense cover he would hold prefect, if it was open country he would break once he saw the birds. More my fault than his, I never put the time into him he deserved. He was however the best retrieving dog I've ever had. He would routinely out retrieve any labs or other dogs we were hunting with. He was a stud. I miss him.
Matt, good luck with Louie! Pups are a pain the ass!!! My 1.5 yo lab reminds me of that every day. You'd think 2.5 acres would be enough to keep him wore down.

Had to go to St Marys today...the hospital is locked down and everyone is being screened before they go in. Only patients and employees are being let in.

I was only there for 20 or so minutes but in that time they closed the door to the waiting room I was in and when I looked through the window they were pushing someone in a hospital bed down the hall who had a clear plastic hood on and all the nurses were fully suited up. Sketchy as fuck.

    Stay safe out there.
