I don't think there are very many hourly employees in any state that would "risk their lives" for a couple hundred bucks being stolen from a big corp like CVS or RiteAid. But yes, it IS against the rules. ha!

Stealing cold meds to make meth? When I was in college my girlfriend worked at a carry out. People would walk in and take all the baking soda, sometimes grab beer while they were at it, say “fuck you” and walk out. My girlfriend made minimum wage and did nothing other than report it to the police, who also did nothing.

In the winter of 1989 I worked graveyard at a Sohio station. Locked myself in at 11 PM and was unlocked by my manager/replacement at 0600. All transactions occurred through a security drawer, pass-through lock box, and from behind 4” plexiglass.

The rules may vary by store or by state, but many places will tell you not to try to stop a robber or shoplifter for your own safety. And technically until they leave the store, it's not shoplifting. After they leave the store, it's out of the employees hands.

Recently, a woman walked into a Burlington coat factory and filled a carriage with baby things. After she circled the store a few times, everyone knew she'd make a run for it with the carriage. Employees could only stand and watch after she charged the door, ran out to her minivan, and shoved the entire carriage inside and took off.

I was in a Total Wine when I saw a guy actually stuff 2 bottles of bourbon in his pants and had 1 in each hand. An employee was watching him as he just walked out then got on the phone to call the cops. A lady (customer) saw it and started berating the employee, yelling at him that he "shoulda fucking tackled him", "chased him down", blah blah blah. 2 other customers told her to shut up and that getting shot or stabbed wasn't worth a couple bottles of booze. After the guy got off the phone with the cops he said it was store policy to not attempt to stop them. As mentioned before, it's not stealing until they are out the door then it's for the cops to deal with, plus why risk your life for that?

It sucks in the towns that are limiting cops from responding to non emergency calls.

This incident happened last year, but I get what your saying. They probably wouldn't respond if it happened a few weeks ago.
