Front main seal leaking??

Well I think my front main seal is leaking. The bottom of my engine is covered in oil and it only happens when the truck is running. Never once have it left a spot of oil on the ground. Nor is it bad enough to make the level drop on the dip stick (which I check weekly after discovering this). The leak appears to be coming from the front main seal as opposed to an of the oil lines. I have yet to pull off the crank pulley and check under that.


I was just wondering if anyone else has ever heard of this problem??

Not nearly that bad.. I just have a light film of oil that occassionally forms a drop if I dont clean it off for more than a week.

 

yea just had my leak fixed it was a crackcase gasket.....
if you had pics of exactly where it is forming it would be better

 

I was looking around on here, it seems like the timing cover is a place known to develop leaks

I just have a light film basically everywhere but it seems to start around the front main/crank seal, so thats my best guess for now

 

yea i thought it was mine also but i cleaned it up real nice with engine cleaner and then you could see it

 

i had my front timing cover seal start leaking. It would leak at the bottom left corner very light then it got a little bad over time. Dealer wanted $1500 to fix it i bought oem toyota parts and fixed it for $90.

 

yup thats what i would have done if it wasnt warrentied...
i got more leaks than a subamarine on mine

 

I replaced my front engine oil seal (crank seal) myself about 2 months ago. The seal was around $20 and can be done in a few hours. I made a pulley holder from a piece of flat stock. Tried using the ratchet strap/chain to the frame method without luck. Loosened the bolt by bumping the starter with the breaker bar against the frame.

just replaced the front main on my 05 there are other posts on here about the pulley causing the oil leak somehow. it rubs a grove into the metal or something. i cant find it now.

 

I forgot about this thread.. well they replaced the main seal and reinstalled my stock pulley.

Ans then the leak started again... turns out the stock pulley wasn't creating a good seal either and it needs to be replaced too. Good news is that the dealer is replacing the seal again without charging me any labor. I only have to pay for the new pulley ($300 but it could be worse)

Hey man im pretty sure my crank shaft seal just shit the bed as well. So you are telling me i need a new pulley AND the crank seal?

 

So, anyone confirm this??

 

If pully is grooved see if they have sleeve kit for that size seal .Something like this.

 

Does this look like it is the front main? Found it while replacing my idler pulleys.

 

Timing chain cover is also possible

 

I hope not. I will have to look and see how high up the oil staining goes. Crossing my fingers it's not the cover...don't have the money to fix it and don't feel like it is something I could tackle on my own.

 

I understand, now is not a great time for repairs. It looks like it will be ok for awhile just keep an eye on your oil level. There are videos on just about everything lots of other good resources to if you decided to do the job just be meticulous about organization put everything in bags label it take tons of pictures do everything you can to help yourself.
