Thinking of stepping up to a Tundra. Input please from those that have done it...

I did the opposite going from Tundra to Tacoma. When I had two boys in high school, the CrewMax Tundra was perfect. Plenty of room for the family, even on long road trips. I will be an empty nester in the fall and more than 95% of the time I don’t have any back seat passengers, so the Tacoma is perfect.

 

+1 on the 4runner. We have a 3rd gen Tacoma crew cab alongh with a 5th gen 4runner w/ 3rd row. The middle seat in the 4runner has tons of space. Not so much for the 3rd row but great for kids.

We have a 18 Tundra and my 2020 Taco in the family. The Tundra is fun to drive until you refill gas and the parking is a pain in the ass

Right. I mean I legitimately have a need for both. I use the Tundra for towing and hauling, getting me to the mountain 40+ time a ski season. I have four dogs that I take almost everywhere and it's my daily driver, although I'm self employed and work from home, its what I use to get around most of the time. It's big and comfortable and the ride is so smooth it's awesome for road trips.

The Tacoma is my therapy and is my spoiled child. It gets all the cool mods, has all the fun off roading and gets to go to the B.I.D. off road races every year. Let's not forget regular spa treatments and the occasional mall crawl or trip to my local Home Depot to get something I may need. At the end of the day it gets to relax in a nice environmentally controlled garage. Spoiled Bitch

 

Only issue I have with a Tundy is can I get a $100 on pump 7.

 

My taco is the DD. I was traveling all over the country for work and doing 40k+ miles a year. Got the tundra last year to put the camper on and be the tow pig.

I like them both for their own their own reasons. You really can’t go wrong either way.

 

Gas is under $2 here now so it’s more like $60. It’s not so much fun when you are out west getting fuel for $4/gallon

 

I was thinking of making that jump but have decided to wait a few more years for the new gen tundra to come out for better fuel efficiency. Plus I love the taco and would hate to give it up. Mid size truck is just so much easier to drive , and I have to commute to the city when there’s not a pandemic so parking in garages and tight spaces is a must

good luck with the decision, the tundra drives great and the space is amazing. Wish it had more updates tech/features like other full-size but it’s reliable which ultimately is what I’d want

 

I thought about holding off on a tundra for the refresh, but after having an early build 2016 Tacoma, I decided I was getting the proven 5.7 power train before it disappears.

 

Do what I did and get the wife a used 200 series . It will seat 8 people. It tows as much as the tundra. It will out wheel the tundra and the tacoma with ease. Oh and it also gets 13-17mpg like the tundra. 4 runner and and gx460 are great options as well. But back to the original question. If you need a bigger truck then get the tundra. I had a 14 tundra that I traded for a 16 f150 and to be honest the f150 with the 5.0 towed better, rode better, got better mileage and was just as reliable. However if I did it again I would get the tundra because I don't care about mileage, the tundra is more comfortable, more dependable and better looking to me. It also has better resale. To me the tundra is a better vehicle but the f150 is a better truck. I'm in a Tacoma now and love it. Kids dont love the back seat but I really don't care. They have more room than I had riding in the back of my dad's extended cab 94 f150 growing up. So I really don't feel sorry for them. When they are in the back I just scoot my seat up and everyone is happy.

 

Yeah but.... it's based on the 200 Series Land Cruiser... it's a helluva HD 1/2 ton, built like a damn brick sh*thouse. My prediction, some day they'll be sought after like the 1985 solid axle pickups.

 

I must have got lucky with my Tundra. My taco with lift, skids, bumpers and 285s gets worse mileage than my 19 Tundra with lift, skids, bumpers and 285s. 13 vs 14mpg. I love the 5.7 and the trans shift points are so much better than any toyota v6 auto trans I have owned.

 

I had no idea our gas pumps around here had per transaction dollar limits until I got the Tundra. First time I put gas in it, the pump got to $74 and started slowing down and stopped at $75. I had do the whole payment thing again to get that last $7 or $8 to fill it up. Went to a different gas station the next time and it did the same thing. Finally found one that would let me drop that $80+ at one time.

 

Been thinking this myself lately. Mainly for extra room for family and extra headroom for myself/driver + V8 power. Currently I maybe getting 15-16mpg or so on 33, lifted, Re-geared so Tundra ain't too bad with MPG. Another thing is I keep wanting to spend more on Mods which I don't want to do If I'll end up selling for Tundra. I'm also very curious has to next redesign of Tundra and so maybe 2022 when Toyota will finally redesign? But then again Toyota will not release special trims like TRD Pro etc the first year or two.

 

I have a 2013 tundra double cab 5.7, Same powertrain as the new one with a different body. The tundra powertrain is definitely a lot smoother and powerful, no awkward shift points or engine lugging. Also the back seat is quite a bit bigger it seems then the Tacoma double cab, even though from the outside the Tacoma doors are bigger. Can’t imagine how big the crewmax is. I think the Tacoma drives a lot better though, it’s easier to park, handles better, brakes better, and rides smoother. They did make updates for refinement on the 2014+ so idk. A dealership conference attendee snapped a pic of a slide confirming Q4 of 2021 for the new 2022 Tundra. I would highly recommend waiting. Rumor is 450hp from a TT V6 and 30mpg highway mileage. Your going to kick yourself when you start filling up that 38 gallon fuel tank on that used Tundra that your considered trading for.
