I recently traded my 2015 TDR OR for the exact same truck in a new 2020 TDR OR, and I have been quite happy, at least until I got my Insurance Bill in the mail today.

My rates (with the exact same coverage, for the exact same truck) nearly doubled. Each of the individual categories of coverage all went up a bit, and the Collision category went up by over 4 times - Yikes!

I have been with the same Insurance Company (State Farm) for over 30 years now, and never had an accident or a claim, and no tickets or anything else like that. I called and made an appointment with my Agent to hear his explanation from across the desk and in person, face-to-face; but it won't happen for about two weeks because of the current 'Crisis'. The cute sounding Gal on the phone said that "the new trucks are very expensive to repair because of all the new high-tech electronic equipment on them". Okay, but doesn't that also mean that these same new trucks are also much safer, and so should then be cheaper to insure? That should be a 'wash'.

What do you, my fellow Tacoma Owners/Enthusiasts think about this? Please share any similar experiences, and advice.

    Thanks in advance.

Mines not that crazy. Shop around, just bc you've been with them 30 years doesn't mean they're going to treat your right

I've noticed the same thing as well, not for a new truck, but insurance in general has been skyrocketing lately. I noticed it with my insurance recently, so I switched, but when shopping around, I noticed that most of the new quotes were still a lot more then I have been paying for years.

I spoke to 2 friends that work at different companies and they didnt have exact answers, but they did say something about most insurance companies raises prices over the next couple years as a whole. And not because the vehicles are more expensive

My insurance was not bad at all. Neither is it on my Tundra. I had Erie and switched to Travelers. I'm old too.

Doesn’t sound right, the new truck is safer and has TSS which is suppose to lower rates. Tell your agent you are shopping around because the rates you have are way too high.

    Safer is personal injury.

The truck is the 4x + collision bit.

And in terms of insurable value, the truck is way ahead of the '15. Its not the 'same truck'. Its 5 years newer and filled with gee whiz stuff.

Suggest you shop at least 3 independant agents. State Farm doesn't care about you. You're just an actuarial number.

Well, I'm definitely getting the feeling that they no longer want me for a customer, so I will begin shopping around if my Agent doesn't provide me with a little satisfaction.

My 2015 held it's value well, and was worth about 28K. So I guess that there is a significant difference in total value compared to the new truck. But does that justify almost double the rates? I don't feel that it does.

When I bought my 2015 TDR OR I traded in a 2002 F350 Diesel 4x4, and my rates went down significantly. And I was told at that time that the rate drop was due to the fact that the Toyota was such a 'safe vehicle'. So why would they shoot up so high now? I dunno, what do you guys think?

Shop around before you talk to your agent so you know what 'satisfaction' will mean to you.

Agents don't negotiate prices. They just fill out forms.

Its why you call independant agents, not single providers

Your rates are expensive because of all the other idiots out there making claims. When there was those massive fires in CA and OR rates went up due to so many claims. There are a lot of factors affecting the prices. May consider getting another quote. I have Allstate and just renewed with 3 vehicles and it’s $680/6mos

Thank you - that's the kind of info I need. Mine went up by about $275/6 months !

I will definitely be talking to a few local 'Independent Agents' soon

State Farm here 2018 TRD OR 4WD.

I have rental, comp, collision, medical, uninsured motorist, high limits, 500 deduct

I'm paying $55 a month, but I also live in a state where you're more likely to hit a cow vs. jaywalking a meth head

Newer cars have the safety suite features that actually reduce insurance rates. Along with anti theft, they are usually cheaper to insure.

My tacoma was cheaper to insure than my 14 forester XT

This new safety tech shit is becoming a wash as it just makes people more stupid when they drive.

I traded in a 2012 Mazda 3 and my insurance stayed the same to a brand new 2020 trd OR. This has the brake lane keep etc that the Mazda didn’t.

get quotes from other companies. I do quotes whenever the policy is ending if it’s cheaper elsewhere I go there instead.

My Coverage is the same as yours, but with 250 deductable; and I was paying about the same, $60 a month for my 2015; but not any more ! The rate for the Collision coverage went up by almost 5 times the old amount !!
