Looking to buy a Tacoma as my first car. What year of Tacoma is the least expensive(excluding the 2wd and 4 cylinder ones)? I want something that can do moderate offroading and be available for upgrades. Any ideas?

Cheaper the more likely to have frame rot.

    1996 is likely the cheapest.

If you need cheaper, look at 1996-2002 4runner, its very similar to tacoma, but not as expensive. Just as good offroad.

Well the tacoma had 3 fazes the 95.5-97 square look in the front, 98-2000 i call it the weirdo tacoma the lights just looked weird, the 01-2004 are deff more pricey, but tbh a tacoma is a tacoma theure all worth every penny, usually the older ones are higher mileaged so it’ll be cheaper

Condition and mileage are bigger factors than the model year, but obviously the older it is the cheaper it will be.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
Don't rule out the old 2.7 with a 5 speed. I had a 97 4x4 standard cab and it had plenty of balls.

Also this. I had the 3.4 and 2.7 first gen, and although they were both automatic I honestly didn't notice a huge power difference overall, but the 3.4 definitely delivers more at lower RPMs.
