Diesel swap

Guys I am doing a diesel swap on my small 2003 tacoma I have a diesel motor from a MB 240 1981 completely restore any guidance would be helpful.

One most often does lots of research before reaching for the checkbook .

Since this seems to be uncommon diesel swap your pretty much breaking new ground .

Things you need to do figure out just what drive train your going to use.

Figure out just how much fabrication needs done to make it work in your Tacoma

Make your custom parts or have them made $$$

Figure out how your going to merge the diesel engine harness with the Tacoma Harness

Then the minor things like fuel and exhaust.

The other numerous things that arise

 

I always have to have one of a kind truck, I have this engine from a guy that told me that his friend did this on his truck.


Making parts I have everything I can make my self. I was thinking to attach the original transmission make something tricky there I think I can doit I been under there a few times.

That is what I was asking about all the electrical I want to know if that can stay the motor seems really simple, I was thinking to put a turbo to the diesel to make truck faster and one of a kind. I will post pictures of it later.

Your best bet is to get copies of the Toyota Electrical Diagrams for your year truck and the schematics for your engine.

Track down this friend that did this swap get pictures and all the information you can

It's the same, I use the 2003 FSM on my 2004 and there's really no difference.

I’ve owned those MB 2.4 Diesels ......great engines. I just hope you take into account the weight of those things.

 

The easiest, most reliable diesel conversion is of course the one the rest of the world uses for the Hilux. That in itself will cost more than another Tacoma to have for a backup.

If you're curious about other engines used, search for videos. Turn us onto them when you find them. Don't tear the truck apart 'til you have a game plan.

There are lots of reasons it's not popular but the biggest I see outside of cost is there is no power gain from anything that fits. You think it's slow now?

If the haters are on roller skates, it'll be a toss-up.

 

MB 240D were great cars (for 1960-80) they were used in Poland for cabs (private cab drivers used to buy used german 240D and rolled them past 1 million km). But as reliable they were, they have as much power as 4-cyl farm tractor from that era (0-60 in 25 sec on a good day). Not mentioned that they are quite heavy.

If you want a diesel engine from that era you would be much better off with one of Toyota diesels installed in Hilux in 90s (similar gutless lack of power, but better fit). I'm talking about 3L or 5L engines (no turbo, no electronics). These were bulletproof like our gasoline engines we have in 1st gen Tacoma.

By the way you know why Toyota did not publish performance for Hilux Diesel? The same reason why John Deere don't do that for farm tractors - not relevant. I guess the gas mileage is also not relevant for Hilux - it should be in gallons per horsepower hour.
