where is the leak specifically? bottom, side, top, axle tube? if it can maintain at least some oil it will be fine. if it's a small hole try draining and spot weld. if cracked idk

Because only 1 is needed with an open diff.

Not quite. They're not under power but they still spin, just not nearly as fast.

You still have parts rotating they need lubrication unless you have lock out hubs.

bottom line is get it fixed or fill diff. as needed, and yes you can mix the gear oil weights if its basically going to leak out anyways at this point ur just trying to retain some form of lubrication in the diff. its not rocket science.

Driver side-axel diff seal, not housing, will pull/replace cv, LBJ, and tie rod ends, just not yet, waiting on weather to get up in 60's, in 35-40 range now, never done it before so learning on the fly, old truck has 128k on her and runs perfect, BEST vehicle ever owned hands down so am cautious about this type of stuff, all you here on Tacoma World are outstanding and really appreciate all the advice/ experience you give.

Don't run anything ever with out oil , lube.......where it is suposed to be. Back in the old days some folks would put some brake fluid in which would swell the seals and buy you some more time. (if the leak is from one of the seals)

If you're going to call someone out, at least back it up with some knowledge.

Yes, if someone has manual hubs then he could unlock both sides and neither axle will be able to spin the diff.

actually I think they do spin normal. the CVs are "locked" in the hub so as long as the tire is spinning they are rotating at the same speed (at least on my '04 but I would assume same for all ADD?). the axle shaft from the transfer case is idle but at least something is rotating in the differential unless the ADD disengages both CVs inside?

Don’t blame me, I thought everyone had manual hubs...or at least the auto hubs disengage the wheel hub from the axle shafts like every other make on the face of the friggen earth. Why the Hell would you want your cv shafts spinning when unnecessary? geeeeezus

I agree, what I find is very funny is that with an ADD the gears in the front diff are rotating and churning the gear oil at the same time the rear diff is churning gear oil when im in 2wd majority of the timewhy is it when I drain my diffs at 30k miles the front diff oil looks almost like new compared to the rear diff which looks a lot more black and used, I hardly ever use the 4wd in my drive at all, you would think the oil would be equally dark and used in both.:tinfoilhat:

Ain’t funny, it’s dumb. It might as well be a 1980 straight front axle with ujoints and crap. I would immediately go Aisen or Warner manual hubs
