Thanks for the feedback! I'm brainstorming how I can sleep in the bed on bike trips and figure I can just have the rear flap loosely hang down. Or if I go on a long bike roadrip, I may slap some velcro on the tailgate above the backup camera where the pad isn't covering. Then my bars can poke out but the rear flap is 80% covering the back opening.

 

I'm in a similar boat. I don't really have a solution that I like for bike/camp trips. I have a custom mattress that I sleep on under the softopper. But with bikes and tailgate pad it makes it kinda difficult to pack properly for a bike and camp trip. I'm planning to go to a hitch mounted bike rack like the ones 1up USA offers.

 

I agree, a platform hitch rack is probably my best bet. I figure I'll make that transition too in the near future. Shame my Yakima Gatekeeper arrived last month. It really is a solid pad. Whistler is only 3.5 hours north of me, I may just caveman it and sleep next to my bike, stack my couple bins next to myself, and sleep with the canopy 80% closed.

 

I just pulled the trigger on a Softtopper for my first gen Tacoma (when it comes in and I get it on I will post pics so I can join the cool kids in here ...) but I have a question I wanted to ask the hive mind.
I am going to build out the bed to live out of the truck and travel the country once things settle down and I plan on lining the inside frame of the topper with mosquito netting so I can have the sides rolled up when I am at base camp to maximize airflow while I sleep (The massive airflow option and light weight aspects are what finally pushed me into a Softtopper over a traditional topper) but I am not sure the best way to run the netting. I am hoping once I have the topper installed and can really see what I am working with a KISS idea will come to me. But I figured I would ask in here if anyone has done something similar or has an idea of a good way to install the netting. Dunno if this helps but this is essentially the build I am going to do, basically one build that offers two different configurations (One for long term base camp setup and one for a more secure mobile setup that can be easily switched on the fly). Any ideas or thoughts are appreciated. Looking forward to sharing the end result in here since I have not seen too many single cab first gens in this thread (But I still have about 100 pages to go through. LOL)

 

Not sure how you would attach to the inside short of drilling holes in the poles and mounting the net to the inside of the poles? or maybe removing the top and placing the bug net sandwiched between the topper and the polls?

I bought one of these Mosquito nets and tossed it over the outside of the softopper and let it hang down over my bed sides. (quick, simple but not the most sealed).
Its probably the most simple but takes some time to finagle into place each time you want to use it.

So, I just ordered a tan softopper for my '19 MGM DCSB. I am beyond excited. I am looking to use the magnets instead of the velcro, but I want to sew them behind the soft portion of the velco on the canvas. Are there any suggestions for magnet type, strength, and size on Amazon? I am also putting an order in for Chemical Guys. Any start-up tips are more than welcome. Yes, I have read through way to many pages of this thread, dating back to 2013.

I have the gatekeeper as well! It's super good. Honestly though it's good to have multiple options for bikes. If you ever just need to do a shuttle run with friends you can fold the topper down (or go safari mode) and load that puppy up with 5 bikes. If you go for a camping trip you switch it up. At least that's why I'm gonna keep my gatekeeper AND go for the hitch rack.

Also I don't know if you have a sleeping platform in the bed or not, but instead of that I built a shelf over the front of the bed that holds bins, backpacks, heater buddy, water, etc while camping. I have a few photos of it in my build thread, but I'm super happy with having a shelf there. Your feet just go under it while you sleep, super easy and pretty cheap little mod/build.

 

I just got super strong neodymium magnets from the hardware store. I posted it back in this thread. Post #4999. I think they are 1.5" circular magnets. I used 5. The sewing is super easy and fitment is great in between the velcro and the outer topper fabric!

Not mine, but I spotted this 5' topper on a 6' bed. Actually doesn't look as awful as I would have imagined.

I got the updated version, I have only 2 pictures in this thread of it. Ive been meaning to get more pictures, but have not had much of a chance to get the truck out to take some pictures.
