Re-gearing

So has anyone heard anything about regearing? Since 2006 I’ve been calling The 4 Wheel Drive Store every other month asking if it’s available yet. First they said it wasn’t available…then they said it, was but just for a short amount that was already sold out… they then said that they are fixing the bugs and that the 2nd batch isn‘t available yet. What’s the deal! They did say it will cost around $1,700 with install. Does any of this sound familiar?

 

Wow expensive. I haven't actually noticed anyone on here that has actually regeared.

 

I know, and I keep getting the run around on the topic. It can't be good for my truck to have 6” lift with 35’s and not re-geared, I already have 40k on her!

 

How does it feel? Do you do your correction for tires size when you figure fuel mileage? I have 3" lift with 33s and its hardly noticable. If your truck came with 3.73 gears then it will be responding like you have 3.26 gears right now. What are you looking to install some 4.10s maybe? Do you plan on installing them by youreslf? What kinda trouble are they giving you, shouldn't be hard to find some 4.10 or even 4.56 gears for your truck, then a shop or yourself to install.

 

I was told that the gearing for the back are the same as all Toyota trucks. The front are different and were still under development. I wouldn’t want to do it myself, too many things that could go wrong. Yeah I had the 3" lift with 33’s when I first got my truck, I had to go bigger. You might be okay for a while. I know I need new gearing, it feel sluggish when I drive off the line…like I taking off in 2nd gear. I’m not a 100% sure what gearing I’m would put in, I’m thinking maybe 4.88’s.

 

I'll also do some looking into the front diff as I never heard of them being special. We'll see i'll get back with you.

Chris did you regear this truck? If so did you experience any special troubles with your front end, as the OP has mentioned he is being told by the shops or dealers?

Until then, is there anyone on here who has 05+ Tacoma with oversize tires that has re-geared??? I haven’t heard of any…

 

I have re-geared my 08 prerunner. After the 6in lift w/ 33's i noticed the take off was pretty sluggish and of course the MPG sucked. 4wp's did mine out the door for $700 (or close too) and i really noticed a huge diffrence in the take off as well better performance at highway speeds. As for the MPG's, was getting 15 before, now about 17-18. Not a big diffrence in the MPG's, but it did help some. No other engine mods done yet. Went w/ 4:10's

 

That is good info dude, Thanks! I bet it did help. You have a prerunner huh, does that mean you didn’t change your front gearing then?
I have been looking around for a place that will re-gear back and front, I might have found a place that has them, not a 100% sure until I get them.

 

Thats correct the prerunner is 2x4, no front diff. to regear. That was done for a pretty good price.

 

I've seen a lot of guys here were saying 4.10 is good to regear...obviously not
unless you're running on stock tires. 4.10 can't handle 33" no matter what brands your tires are. 4.88 is a perfect match for 33" and 5.29 is great for 35 and up to 44. Why? been there and done that!
anyone planning to regear? get a bigger gear 'cause most of us here are riding on bigger tires. thumps up for owning a toco!one more thing, average for regearing is $700-$1300 depending on what kind of truck you got.
