OEM Toyota Led tail lamp bulbs

Has anyone messed around with the OEM Toyota LED tail lamp bulbs? Compatibility with the optics of regular bulb style lights is likely questionable. These are used on the Prius and Corolla. They are made by Koito, Ichikoh, and Lumiled. They have single and combo. There's also a rear fog light bulb, but it can't be ordered in the USA.

 

I haven’t. What are your plans for them?

 

It would be nice to convert, at a minimum, the rear brake lights on my 3rd Gen. I'm usually drawn to OEM products and solutions as their quality and engineering standards are something much of the aftermarket can only dream about. I know you @crashnburn80 are big on quantifying parts, lol! These bulbs are a move towards affordable, and more importantly, SERVICEABLE! LED lamps. They have the twist lock four prong retainers with O ring gasket, just like the traditional stuff.

That is pretty ideal. One of the major issues with LED in their current implementation is when some LEDs fail, the entire assembly must be replaced, which is I suspect is why they went away from LED tails on the 3rd Gen trucks. Granted the 2nd Gens received LED taillights in 2009 I believe, and LED technology has come a long way since then. It is good to see the move to a more modular implementation and the part standardization makes so much sense from a manufacturing standpoint, just like incandescent bulbs on the market. And I couldn't agree more about the quality comparison to aftermarket.

 

Might be the wrong thread so apologies: I'm thinking through changing the clear "Bed" light bulbs in the 3rd brake light above the bed to LEDs for increased bed illumination. Anybody have experience doing this?

 

Thats one thing I usually hate about OEM led bulbs, when they break you need a new tail light. My wifes RX330 has LED tails, one of them went out and I have to buy a whole new assembly. She doesnt drive at night, so im not even going to bother spending the money.

 

Agreed. If my LEDs went out on my OEM LED tails I’d just replace them with the previous compatible incandescent tails. Moving to a modular model is the right direction.

 

You wouldn't happen to know the year(s) and model(s) of the Corolla and Prius those bulbs fit would you? I'm trying to cross reference to what type of bulbs they are to see if they might fit anything in my garage.

 

No apologies needed. I do not have experience with that, but I'll wager there's a thread or two around here with some info.

These bulbs are used on some 2016 and up models. If you run the pictured part numbers on a sight like www.toyodiy.com you can get a list of what they fit. They will probably not quite fit into existing tail lights, the base diameters might be appropriate, but the prongs will have different spacing. Modifying parts to fit won't be terribly difficult, but there are also optics to worry about.

 

This is exactly what I did. A $2 dollar bulb fixes any problems.
