3rd gen audio build - Joying tacoma headunit

The issue for those of us who are primarily using iOS stuff is that GPM is basically unusable on CarPlay, as Google has shifted resources to YouTube Music, which isn't ready for primetime yet either with content. Both work well in Android, but if we don't connect CarPlay up we don't get Siri handsfree functionality that we get while we are in CarPlay.

GPM on Android is everything I want it to be, and I pay for YouTube Premium as well. I don't really need another service, I just need it to not be shitty. That isn't so much an issue with Zlink as I've had this problem on my Pioneer as well. This is a Google fault.

 

I reached out to joying and asked for there help maybe some form of update that could fix it, if not i’m gonna use it for about a week or so and if it continues or if I can’t get use to it I’m just gonna put my entune back in, The fact that I can’t switch from radio to CarPlay without interruption is a dealbreaker

 

Yeah, I have never gotten play music to work right using carplay on my iphone, I just tether now.

 

Well I ordered one. Lets see how long it takes to get here, ha.

 

Mine works great with a 32 GB thumb drive. I use the provided music player.

 

@Riotfunk - For clarification, did you upgrade to OEM Audio Plus's system plus using the Android (JOY) unit? I currently have OEM Audio + system and want to upgrade my head unit but not sure it would work.

I pulled my android out today and put the stock one in, I wanted to do some mods to it.

Here is the insides if anyone was wondering. You can see the "heatsink" is just a slab of metal with no real cooling. Im going to slap some heatsinks on there soon. I removed all the USB/SIM car/Mic plugs from the motherboard to get better pictures. I might leave some of them out as they are useless to me anyways.

 

So I purchased this on the 13th and I've already got info that its going to be delivered Wednesday the 25th. Guess Hong Kong is good to go?

 

I don't think my stereo is showing up today after all. I just tracked the number that DHL text me and it still shows in Hong Kong. This tracking number doesn't match my eBay tracking number either. I track that one and it also says still in Hong Kong. So I guess I'll be waiting some time. Not sure why I have 2 tracking numbers or why I was texted that it'll be here today?

 

Im honestly surprised you got a number, Asia was hit hard... if going by the reported numbers they didnt loose too many people, if going by the "cell phone users" number, they lost 21 million people*

*Cell phone companies reporting 21 million users missing. We dont know what happened to them, if they broke their phones, lost them, or the user died.

 

Agree and glad you got it ordered. Looking forward to the pics of the heat sinks. One pro tip is to use Kryonaut then go with a heat spreader that is taller then cut down if you need to. If you can also post pics of the chipset before thermal paste and heat sink.

 

The head spreader thats on there is soldered down, So Im not sure if I really want to remove it... if I did, I could get some real cooling going on there. I might end up just thermal glueing some heat sinks to the top of the factory heat spreader and just put a 40mm fan in there to blow air around.

I do need to get a laser temp gauge so I can turn on the unit and find the hot spots that need it. Im guessing that recessed square on the heat spreader is going to be a hotspot.

 

Well guess what just showed up. The written number on the box is the tracking number from eBay. DHL shows that number still on hold in Hong Kong but the text message tracking number was just updated today to reflect that its no longer on hold and been delivered. Hong Kong to LA to Phoenix all in a day, haha.

 

So I got this installed but when I turn it on, it goes directly to the phone screen and beeps. If i try to change the screen, it goes for a second and then pops right back to the phone screen.

And did anyone trim anything to get the face to sit flush?

 

So I got it mostly working. A power cycle fixed the beeping and gave me a working stereo. Backup cams not working though. Nor is being able to program the stereo wheel buttons.

 

There are 2 yellow RCA male plugs on the harness and a single female. Plug the male from the 24 pin plug into the female. That should give you backup camera.

As for setting steering wheel controls, go to car info and you can select your car. I used a 2013 rav4 I think, but just play around with some of the toyota models in there till you find one that works.

 

Found it. I had it plugged into the Video In on the back of the deck. Also realized how I stopped the beeping. I disconnected the Can In and Can Out to troubleshoot. While disconnected, the beeping goes away and the stereo mostly works but I have no canbus. When I plug it back together, the beeping starts up again and the phone screen comes up and starts trying to call the top of my speed dial list. Also found the car setting. It's on the Camry also tried the Rav 4. Neither changed anything.

 

Hmmmmmmm, my headunit is not connected right now, so I cant tell you the exact one I used. Perhaps someone who has theirs setup can tell you what to use.

 

Oh ya and still no camera.
