I have a ARE Z series, overall I like it.

Pros: looks pretty much like factory equipment, dry, lockable space.

Cons: I don't think anyone's mentioned this one: Your side and rear visability is seriously hindered with a cap, some are worse than others. I installed blind spot mirrors on both sides because you can't see shit out the side or back of the truck now. I'm used to it, but I prefer being able to glance over my shoulder to check my blind spots on the highway.

Where do you go for bed rugs? Expensive? I'm new to the cap world.

    Thanks

Most truck places will have them for about $340. Cheapest I've seen is $291 from toyotapartsstore.com for the full bed.

You can also get a bedrug that only covers the floor for $149.

I have a Leer XL, and with the canopy locked, the tailgate does open an inch or so. Enough to get a prybar in there and force it open the rest of the way.

I paid about $2K for mine. That included a roof net (on the inside) $70, a removable sliding window (by the cab) $150, factory mounted Thule tracks ($200) and installation labor ($70).

My Tundra had a really nice Tonneau cover that was great for keeping my stuff secure and hidden. I really liked that there was no way to look in there and see what I had. Couldn't really stick the dog under there unless she was really muddy. I looked for a truck that had a topper already on it and I eventually found one that was priced the same as it would have been without it, it's not a very high end model but it looks sleek and keeps the dog safe and out of the cab. I haven't had a need to take it off to haul anything but I also have 2 trailers. We will see how a 300"+ bull elk fits under there this weekend- I hope.

Wow, I guess I got off easy. $900 + $40 for clamps. (Still... more than I paid for my last whole truck!!)

Very good point about the visibility. It was very limited on my old camper (can see it in the background - can't see **** thru those plastic domes). I got the blind spot mirrors and eventually driving it became second nature. (Did take the shell off for a Bay Area run, tho.)

Unlike that funky old thing, on the new shell, good glass windows run almost the entire length and that makes the visibility MUCH better. That, combined with the generously large mirrors make the visibility from new rig seem as good as a passenger car. (... to me anyways ;)

I like the soft top because I can fold it down and still load my dirtbike in the bed. then when I unload at camp, I have a place to crash!

if i were to do a topper, and i just might, this seems like the hot setup. dogs, gear, comfort, safety... pretty much has it all. funny, i was discussin this idea with the girl a hour ago as i gave her the tour of our new taco-ma and she was diggin it. now i trip over this post. thanx man.

will i need to bolster the rear suspension of my long bed sr5 to support the added weight?
