So you push your 1st gen offroad - what cracks next?

I know all my bedside damage is on the passenger side for this reason... But actually I put myself on more rocks with the driver tire cause I can actually see what's going on. I rather keep myself on top of all the rocks instead of the ruts/holes.

 

Other than @Squeaky Penguin, who else fabbed their own core support/reinforced it?

Thinking this is the route I need to go as mine is collapsing at the core support body mounts in the front.
Gonna try and plate them top and bottom with some thicker sheet metal, but I don't know if that'll last and it just ends up failing somewhere further down the line.

 

With the latest findings in cracks being near the firewall I think you'd be best starting from there and working out.

 

There's been a few 2nd gen guys that have done it, not sure I've seen it done on another 1st gen.

But yeah, mine is now cracking by the firewall. I'm going to weld it/plate it and cross my fingers I don't have to tear it apart again.

 

I think that's what i'll end up doing. Tired of hearing the sheet metal clicking in the front and definitely don't want it punching through itself on a trail.

Plated both sides of the core support body mounts today.

If this fails again, i'm gonna chop off the whole lower section and put in some rectangular tubing. Pretty sick of dealing with this issue. Hopefully this holds up.
18 gauge plates on both sides and sleeved between them where the bolt goes through.

 

Front corners of the bed. Should be an easy fix with some 1" flat stock and rivets for the upper rail to keep it relatively flat.

 

We're attempting to reinforce this area on @Digiratus truck. Is that the front panel of the bed? Do you think the load from your canopy (if you still have it on) on the bed sides caused that tear?

 

Will be watching what you come up with for bed mounts, Ryan. Mine is fubared. I can push up on the corner of the camper and get quite a bit of movement from this cracked mount.

 

Oh great. Now I got to look closer at my corners...

 

I'm sure that's the primary reason. There's 250# sitting on the rails swaying from side to side.

Same issue you have. It's looking at it as if you were standing between the bed and the cab.

Hopefully I can find the motivation to get back on that project tomorrow. My measurements were wrong on the 1st draft. Learning Fusion 360 as I go and keep finding better ways to draw. Hopefully I can make it so the drawing is easily adjusted to accommodate no body lift. I got a closer look today and it looks like Toyota does have those mounts reinforced so now I'm wondering if 10 guage will be enough...

 

are you sure that's not from the frame flexing?

 

That is probably a factor as well.

 

I was just looking under my DCSB bed at this. It doesn't look deformed like @jubei 's first body life caused and it's not cracked like yours, but I feel that some of my flexing is from this thin stamped metal beam that mounts the bed to the frame. It's interesting that the short bed has an additional reinforcement at that mount around the thin stamp channel/beam. Also interesting with the short bed is because the wheel wells are all the way to the front of the bed, this beam is not supported on the ends by the actual tub of the bed.

These photos are at the front of my bed on the passenger side. I'm realizing that maybe your photos are of the rear most mount.

 

My picture was of the forward most mount. Obviously, they look way different than the double cab mounts.

 

I understand, just showing photos in case you see something that gives you ideas.

The frames are pretty much the same though, right other than the body mounts?

Most interesting that the short bed has an additional sandwich around the beam at the tower mount to the frame.

 

Found these today. Broken spot welds inside the area behind both of the tail lights.




This is on the bed structure below the tailgate on the passenger side.

And then there is the bumper. While not OEM, it is there nonetheless.

 

This thread motivated me to look further into my cracked coil bucket, and I’m sure glad I came across it when I did!
Not sure it would have survived more than a few trips I ended up cutting and brake forming a piece of 3/16 to cap it off with legs running down the sides of the bucket, plug welded top and sides

 

I'm hesitant to go to performance coilovers in the front because of all of this cracking nonsense. Idk how mine haven't yet being that I beat the hell out of them on OME. Could be the relatively new frame doesn't have enough fatigue cycles on it yet.
